Due to the impact of continuous heavy rains and floods in recent times, the embankment along the Thach Han River, specifically the section passing through Lap Thach neighborhood, Nam Dong Ha ward, Quang Tri province, has suffered serious erosion, affecting the lives of dozens of households and the newly constructed Tran Thanh Tong road.

On December 8th, observations at the scene revealed that many sections of the embankment had collapsed and subsided, creating deep cavities that eroded into the sidewalk of Tran Thanh Tong Street, directly threatening the roadbed and surrounding infrastructure. The sturdy concrete frame of the embankment was also broken and shattered into many pieces, lying piled up at the river's edge.

Many sections of reinforced concrete along with soil and rocks have been washed away into the river due to landslides. Numerous riverside trees have been uprooted, leaning precariously towards the water, revealing their bare, hollowed-out roots. The once sturdy embankment has been eroded by the water, creating steep cliffs about 3 meters high, posing a significant danger to passersby.

Ms. Pham Thi Hien, residing in Lap Thach residential area, Nam Dong Ha ward, gazed worriedly at the dilapidated sections of the embankment lying haphazardly along the riverbank, stating that the embankment's erosion seriously affects the lives and homes of the residents. The Tran Thanh Tong road, which the government invested hundreds of billions of dong in and was recently completed, is now under threat. Many families living here want to repair or rebuild their houses but dare not because the erosion is becoming increasingly complex and serious. The residents hope that the higher authorities will soon invest in rebuilding the embankment so that they can live and work in peace.

According to many residents of Lap Thach neighborhood, the erosion of the Thach Han River embankment in this section has been occurring since 2020 and is becoming increasingly complex. Particularly after the continuous heavy rains and floods in October and November, the situation has worsened, with many new erosion points appearing and encroaching further inland. The streetlights and trees along this road are at risk of collapsing at any time.

Mr. Nguyen The Ton, Party Secretary and Head of the Lap Thach residential group in Nam Dong Ha ward, said that landslides occur every year, with each flood further eroding the riverbank. Previously, the distance from the road edge to the riverbank was more than 6 meters, but now it has been deeply eroded, with many embankment beams falling into the river. To date, the eroded section of the embankment extends for about 1 kilometer, affecting the lives of approximately 60 households living in the area. People often exercise and participate in community activities in this area, which is very dangerous, especially for children. He requested that the government pay attention and provide support to quickly address the issue and protect Tran Thanh Tong road and the houses and property of the affected households.

According to a representative from the Nam Dong Ha ward leadership, the local authorities are conducting surveys and assessing the situation to determine solutions to ensure the safety of structures and property along the riverbanks.

In recent years, intense rainfall and floods, along with the impact of climate change, have exacerbated the erosion of the Thach Han River banks. In particular, many sections of the Thach Han River banks, despite being reinforced with sturdy embankments, still experience serious erosion during the rainy season. Examples include embankment erosion in Nhu Le village, Quang Tri ward; and the erosion and subsidence of a 1,000-meter stretch of the Thach Han River embankment in Ai Tu commune...

This situation has caused particular concern among the people and local authorities. Relevant units have requested that the authorities promptly allocate funds to invest in the construction of a new embankment system to prevent landslides, ensuring the safety of lives and property and stabilizing the lives of the people.
