National Highway 62 is small and narrow, while traffic volume is very heavy.

National Highway 62 will be upgraded to Class III delta road standards.

According to the Department of Construction, the project to upgrade and expand National Highway 62 was approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1445/QD-TTg dated June 30, 2025 and is one of three regional connectivity and climate change adaptation projects in the Mekong Delta. The project is managed by the Ministry of Construction , using loans from the World Bank. Accordingly, the project has a starting point at Km4+200 - the intersection with Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway and an end point at Km74 with a total length of about 69km. In particular, the project will build a new bypass through the center of Tan Thanh commune, about 8km long. When completed, National Highway 62 will be upgraded to meet the standards of a grade III plain road, with a design speed of 80km/h, a cross-section of the roadbed width of 12m, and a road surface width of 11m. The sections that have been guaranteed to be of the same size as the current status and the road surface has been strengthened. The project to upgrade and expand National Highway 62 will be implemented in 4.5 years after the loan agreement takes effect with a total investment of more than VND 3,240 billion. Of which, construction and equipment costs are more than VND 1,739 billion, and site clearance is about VND 992 billion. However, up to now, the project has been behind schedule compared to the demand and the existing infrastructure system has seriously degraded, posing a potential risk to traffic safety.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Construction Dang Hoang Chuong, in the past time, the Provincial People's Committee and the Provincial National Assembly Delegation have repeatedly sent documents requesting the Central Government to soon allocate capital and speed up the project investment progress. However, the World Bank loan agreement is still under negotiation, expected to be signed by the end of 2025 to strive to start construction in the second quarter of 2026. Therefore, while waiting for the project to start, the Department continues to request the Vietnam Road Administration and the Ministry of Construction to increase capital to maintain temporary repairs, ensure smooth traffic on National Highway 62, and at the same time recommend the National Assembly to prioritize capital allocation and supervise the project implementation process. The Department of Construction also requested the People's Committees of communes where the project passes through to focus on reviewing land use planning and preparing the most favorable conditions to carry out site clearance when the project is officially implemented.

People are looking forward to the project every day.

Highway 62, starting from Highway 1 and ending at Binh Hiep - Prey Voa Border Gate, was invested and built in 1999, with a scale mainly of level IV plain, 9m roadbed, 6-8m asphalt road surface. This is considered a particularly important traffic route of the province and is the only route connecting from the provincial administrative center to the communes of Dong Thap Muoi region. In addition, Highway 62 also plays an important role in connecting the region between the Southeast region and the Mekong Delta; connecting many important traffic routes such as Highway 1, N2, N1, Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway, Provincial Roads 829, 831, 837 and Binh Hiep International Border Gate, playing an important role in domestic and international trade, promoting socio -economic development, ensuring national defense and security in border areas.

After a long time of exploitation and use, the road has not been maintained or repaired, so it has now seriously degraded, the road surface is small, narrow, and heavily damaged. Mr. Huynh Ba Luong (residing in My An commune) hopes: "The road surface of National Highway 62 is currently too damaged, traffic accidents happen almost every month. People hope the project will start as soon as possible so that traffic can be more convenient and safer."

Upgrading and expanding National Highway 62 is very urgent. This is not only the desire of the people but also an urgent requirement for the development of the province, attracting investment into the economic zone and improving the efficiency of trade through Binh Hiep International Border Gate as well as promoting the driving role of the regional connecting route./.

After many proposals to increase capital for maintenance and repair, recently, Road Management Area IV, Vietnam Road Administration decided to allocate about 10 billion VND to repair the road surface of National Highway 62. However, compared to the repair requirements, this amount of capital is too small, not meeting the requirements. Most recently, at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh Lam affirmed that currently, National Highway 62 has seriously degraded, many locations are damaged, posing a risk of traffic accidents. Meanwhile, with only more than 2 months left until Lunar New Year, the traffic volume of people and vehicles is very high, especially people from the Western provinces returning home to celebrate Tet. Therefore, while waiting for the project to start construction, Mr. Nguyen Minh Lam requested the Ministry of Construction to allocate enough funding to carry out maintenance and repair soon. Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh also requested the Ministry of Construction to accept the proposal of the Provincial People's Committee and consider additional funding to repair damaged areas on National Highway 62 before the Lunar New Year of Binh Ngo in 2026 to ensure traffic safety.
