The Buôn Ma Thuột airport master plan "opens the skies" for tourism in the Central Highlands.

With a target of increasing capacity to 5 million passengers by 2030 and 7 million passengers by 2050, Buon Ma Thuot Airport is not only being invested in comprehensively in terms of runways, terminals, and aprons, but is also linked to the development of general aviation, tourism, and services, creating momentum to connect the Central Highlands with major domestic tourism centers and gradually expanding internationally.

According to the planning documents, the airport, located in Tan Lap ward, Dak Lak province, is a domestic airport, used jointly for civilian and military purposes, playing the most important aviation hub role in the Central Highlands region.

During the period 2021-2030, the airport is planned to meet ICAO's 4C standard, with a capacity of 5 million passengers and 10,000 tons of cargo per year, with 19 aircraft parking positions, suitable for operating narrow-body aircraft such as the A320 and A321.

By the 2050 vision, the projected capacity will increase to 7 million passengers and 15,000 tons of cargo per year, with the number of parking spaces increasing to 27, meeting the growing transportation needs of the expanded Central Highlands region after administrative unit reorganization.

The airport infrastructure is planned comprehensively, initially upgrading the existing 3,000-meter runway to ensure safe operation in all weather conditions. When demand increases, a second 2,400-meter runway will be added, creating parallel operational capacity and improving aircraft handling capacity and flight frequency.

The CAT II precision approach and landing system also helps increase reliability and minimize the impact of bad weather – a crucial factor in a highland area.

Regarding the terminal, during the period 2021-2030, the airport will continue to operate and upgrade Terminal T1, while simultaneously constructing Terminal T2 with a capacity of 3 million passengers per year.

By 2050, Terminal 2 will be expanded to handle approximately 5 million passengers per year, forming a modern terminal complex that meets the travel needs of tourists, businesspeople, and residents in the region.

The cargo terminal and air logistics area are also planned, creating favorable conditions for the development of transportation of agricultural products, coffee, pepper, and fruits - characteristic products of Dak Lak and the Central Highlands - linked with tourism and trade.

Notably, the plan also allocates land for general and private aviation areas, serving charter flights, tourist flights, sightseeing helicopters, rescue, and medical services. This is considered a suitable direction for the development of high-end tourism, experiential tourism, and ecotourism in the Central Highlands in the coming years.

According to reports from the tourism industry and mainstream media, Dak Lak in particular and the Central Highlands in general are emerging as a destination with great potential, offering cultural tourism products such as gong music, traditional festivals, ecotourism in forests, lakes, and waterfalls, agricultural tourism, and coffee tourism. Buon Ma Thuot is being developed as the "coffee capital," and a tourism and service center for the region.

Therefore, expanding Buon Ma Thuot Airport will shorten travel time to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Can Tho, etc., while also creating a basis for opening new routes and attracting domestic and international tourists.

As the "gateway to the skies" of the Central Highlands, Buôn Ma Thuột Airport, when invested in and upgraded according to the plan, will not only serve socio-economic development and ensure national defense and security, but also become an important driving force to promote tourism in the highlands, strengthen links with the Central Coast, the Southeast region and major tourist centers, contributing to making the Central Highlands an attractive destination on the Vietnamese tourism map.
