A decision that shook MU.

Manchester United witnessed another major upheaval in its top management as Sir Dave Brailsford officially stepped down from his role as Director of Football after just over a year in the position.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's close right-hand man has unexpectedly left Manchester United.

According to The Times , although the information was released rather quietly through Companies House filings on May 7th, the impact of this decision could bring about significant changes at Old Trafford.

Dave Brailsford was one of the first figures to emerge after INEOS acquired a stake in Manchester United in early 2024. He is considered the architect behind the club's restructuring, directly involved in appointing CEO Omar Berrada and managing the football division.

However, the disappointing period under Ruben Amorim gradually diminished Brailsford's role. In this context, the "benefit from small improvements" philosophy that Brailsford had so successfully implemented in British cycling no longer had a strong effect at Old Trafford.

However, this departure does not mean Brailsford has severed ties with MU. He remains a close advisor to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and continues to serve as Sporting Director of INEOS. In fact, Brailsford returned to the INEOS Grenadiers racing team in the middle of last year with the goal of conquering the Tour de France for the eighth time.

During his time at MU, Brailsford launched "Mission 21" - a plan to lead the men's team to their 21st English league title, along with "Mission 1" for the women's team, as part of "Project 150" leading up to the club's 150th anniversary in 2028.

He also played a major role in reforming MU's facilities and operating model, including the £50 million Carrington training ground upgrade project and a series of changes in sports science , nutrition, and management.
