Ramsey follows James, leaving Mexico

Aaron Ramsey terminates his contract with Pumas UNAM and becomes a free agent, marking the end of his short adventure in Mexico.

The Welsh midfielder is one of the famous names arriving in Mexican football this season.

On November 1, Pumas UNAM officially announced the termination of the contract with the Welsh midfielder. Aaron Ramsey will leave the team immediately, become a free player and ready to find a new destination before the January 2026 transfer window.

The move ends a short and difficult spell in Mexican football, where Ramsey played just six games. He joined Pumas UNAM as a free agent in early July after leaving his hometown club Cardiff City.

Ramsey signed a one-year contract, with an option to extend until June 2026, and is considered a blockbuster signing of Mexican football for the 2025 Apertura season, alongside other names who have played in Europe such as James Rodriguez, Ángel Correa, Sergio Ramos or Keylor Navas.

However, the journey to Mexico quickly became difficult for the Welsh midfielder. Ramsey suffered a thigh injury before signing for Pumas. The Mexican club initially hoped he would quickly adapt and recover, but they had to wait more than two months for Ramsey to make his debut.

In the end, the 34-year-old midfielder made just six appearances, starting three games and scoring one goal. He also had problems adjusting to the altitude and dust in Mexico City.

A recent muscle injury, combined with family reasons, has left Ramsey frustrated and wanting to end his contract with Pumas UNAM. Ramsey is the second big star to decide to leave Liga MX after James Rodriguez. The Colombian midfielder will leave Club Leon when his contract expires next December.
