Cristiano Ronaldo 's red card against Ireland and the way he left the pitch with gestures towards the stands has been heavily criticised in his home country of Portugal.

“Cristiano should be ashamed,” headlined A Bola in an editorial by Hugo Vasconcelos.

“What the Portuguese captain did was regrettable. Not only because of the violence, but also because losing your temper in a moment of frustration is something that can happen, even if it shouldn’t.

The worst thing was his reaction, all the drama: from the crying, as if the Irish player who got elbowed was just faking it; to the shaking of his head as if he didn't understand what he had done; to the clapping towards the crowd, as if it was the stands that were at fault for the red card, not him.”

The editorial continued: “Cristiano Ronaldo is 40 years old. In his press conference on Wednesday, he focused on provoking his opponents, the Irish coach and the audience.

You created an atmosphere you couldn't control. You made a mistake. The least you could have done was apologize, but what you really need is to feel ashamed.”

Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, who had a verbal spat with Ronaldo as he left the pitch, mocked the Portugal captain's comments – that he was put in a “hostile environment” .

“He thanked me for putting pressure on the referee. But it was his own actions on the pitch that led to the red card. It had nothing to do with me, unless I distracted him.”

Asked if he spoke to Ronaldo after the match, Hallgrimsson replied:

“No, I think we said enough when he left the pitch. There's nothing more to say. It was just a silly moment for him, I think.”
