Rooney asserted that Pogba was MU's mistake. |
In the program The Overlap , Rooney affirmed that MU "threw money out the window" when rushing into deals to polish their name, instead of building a team with real depth.
"The recruitment work before was terrible. They only brought in big names. Lukaku, Zlatan, Pogba are good players, but MU only cared about reputation, not suitability. And they spent huge amounts of money on that," Rooney was upset.
The three names Rooney named were Romelu Lukaku (£75 million), Paul Pogba (£89 million) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – a free agent but considered a symbol of the star-chasing period. In total, the three deals cost MU £164 million, not including huge salaries and bonuses.
"Shrek" believes that it was a series of mistakes in transfers that caused MU to lose its identity after Sir Alex Ferguson's time: "It took a long time for the team to really overcome those mistakes. Over the past 10 years, many MU players have been heavily criticized. But now we can see a little bit of confidence returning."
Under coach Ruben Amorim, the "Red Devils" are only one point behind the top 4 after 11 rounds. For Rooney, that is a positive sign: "Now they have some good results, and confidence is back. Even the coach is starting to find his rhythm. I see the team gradually improving, the players understand each other better."
However, the former striker still maintains a realistic view. He believes that MU cannot dream of winning the championship yet, but can absolutely compete for a place in the Champions League.
