Washing your face with hot water can cause your skin to "cry out for help".

According to Dr. Do Thi Minh Nghia, Head of the Dermatology Department at the Central Traditional Medicine Hospital, skincare in cold weather is not overly complicated, but it requires adherence to scientific principles to both protect the skin and maintain a youthful appearance for a long time.

In winter, when air humidity drops significantly, the skin's natural protective barrier becomes more fragile than ever. This is also the time when skin is most prone to dryness, flaking, dullness, and premature aging if not properly cared for.

According to Specialist Doctor Do Thi Minh Nghia, one of the most common mistakes in winter is washing your face with water that is too hot. In cold weather, many people think that very hot water will be more comfortable, but in reality, this habit does more harm than good.

Hot water washes away the natural oils that help moisturize and protect the skin, causing it to dehydrate faster, becoming dry, cracked, and sensitive. Doctors recommend using only lukewarm water, around 30-35 degrees Celsius. After washing your face, while your skin is still slightly damp, immediately applying toner or moisturizer will help "lock in" moisture, maintaining the skin's softness and elasticity.

Besides external moisturizing, internal hydration also plays a crucial role in winter skincare. Cold weather often reduces the sensation of thirst, causing many people to drink less water than they actually need, while the body still loses water through the skin and breath. To prevent dry and dull skin, Dr. Do Thi Minh Nghia recommends maintaining a daily water intake of about 2-2.5 liters. In addition to plain water, you can supplement with fruit juices rich in vitamin C such as orange, grapefruit, guava, or coconut water. Vitamin C not only boosts immunity but also supports collagen production, helping skin become bright, even-toned, and full of vitality in the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year).

Another common misconception doctors encounter with patients is that because there's less sunlight in winter, sunscreen isn't necessary. In reality, ultraviolet rays, especially UVA rays, remain strong even on cloudy or rainy days. UVA rays can penetrate clouds and glass, silently damaging the collagen structure under the skin, causing dark spots and accelerating the aging process. Therefore, sunscreen remains an essential step in your morning skincare routine. Choosing a sunscreen with added moisturizing ingredients will provide comprehensive protection without drying out your skin.

For those wary of cosmetics containing many chemicals, natural ingredients from the kitchen can also become powerful "helpers" for winter skin. According to doctors, unsweetened yogurt, honey, turmeric powder, or rice water are all safe and effective options. Yogurt contains lactic acid which gently exfoliates and deeply moisturizes, while turmeric and honey have anti-inflammatory properties, helping to heal cracked skin and improve skin tone.

Regularly applying natural face masks about 2-3 times a week will help your skin recover quickly, becoming smoother and more radiant. For dry skin, rice water is also a simple and easy remedy, but it's important to use only freshly washed rice water and not let it sit for too long to avoid the risk of bacterial growth and skin infections.

Regular exfoliation is an effective way to keep your skin looking its best during the winter.

Alongside moisturizing, regular exfoliation is also an important step that shouldn't be overlooked. The accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin's surface not only makes the skin rough but also hinders the absorption of nutrients. However, in winter, skin is often more sensitive, so it's best to prioritize gentle cream or gel-based exfoliants, avoiding those with large granules that can easily damage the skin.

According to Specialist Doctor Do Thi Minh Nghia, skincare is a long-term process that requires patience and a proper understanding of one's skin. By fully adhering to the steps of cleansing, moisturizing from the inside out, and protecting the skin from environmental factors, women can maintain supple, healthy, and radiant skin, ready for spring outings and Tet celebrations with confidence.
