According to 9to5Mac , despite analyses showing that megapixel count (MP) is not the deciding factor for smartphone image quality, Samsung is still racing to develop ultra-high-resolution sensors. The research and development of a 500 MP sensor demonstrates the South Korean company's strategy to increase megapixel count, even though this may result in more noise in the original image.

Samsung is determined to battle Sony for Apple's orders.
Along with researching and developing its own 500MP sensor for smartphones, Samsung is also reportedly developing a unique and advanced sensor to attract orders from Apple. This would be a direct blow from Samsung to Sony, which has held the exclusive position of supplier of image sensors for iPhone cameras for over a decade.
This report comes shortly after news emerged that Apple would soon be switching to a new supplier for iPhone camera sensors. This aligns with Apple's current strategy of diversifying its supply sources to secure better negotiated prices.
The partnership between Apple and Sony has been long-lasting and effective. Over two years ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook shared on X (formerly Twitter) about a visit to Sony's factory in Kumamoto, Japan, where camera sensors are manufactured. However, last summer, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that at least one of the camera sensors for the iPhone 18, expected to launch in 2026, will be manufactured by Samsung. This sensor is said to have a 48MP resolution and a 1/2.6-inch size for the wide-angle camera. Notably, Samsung has established a dedicated division to collaborate with Apple on this project.
This information has now been confirmed by Jukanlosreve, a Samsung expert on X. He stated that the South Korean company is developing a 3-layer sensor with a PD-TR-Logic configuration, promising superior performance compared to the current Sony Exmor RS sensor. This multi-layer configuration will improve camera performance and response speed.
