Samsung Messages will cease operation from July 2026, marking a clear transition for Samsung to Google Messages on Galaxy devices.
According to Samsung's migration guide, users need to switch to Google Messages before this deadline to continue using messaging. If they remain on Samsung Messages after the app stops working, they may lose access to old messages if their message history has not been transferred to the new app.
Samsung began encouraging Galaxy users to switch to Google Messages starting in 2024, when it stopped pre-installing its own messaging app on new high-end models. However, Samsung had already begun implementing this transition earlier, starting its move towards Google Messages in 2021.
In the guide, Samsung outlines the steps to switch to Google Messages, including for phones still running Android 12 and Android 13. Google Messages is currently the default messaging app on many Android phones, including Samsung's newer Galaxy models.
To encourage users to switch, Samsung highlighted several features of Google Messages. The app supports RCS, a next-generation messaging standard that allows users to see login status, participate in group chats more conveniently, and send higher-quality images compared to traditional SMS messages.
Google Messages also has the ability to detect and filter spam messages using artificial intelligence (AI), supports message access across multiple devices, and integrates some Gemini AI features. However, users are not obligated to choose Google Messages, as there are other SMS messaging apps available on the Google Play Store.
For Galaxy users still using Samsung Messages, switching before July 2026 is necessary to avoid communication disruptions and minimize the risk of losing message history.
