Russia said one aircraft was damaged in a drone attack on a military airport in the country's northwest, and later reported further attacks in Belgorod and Moscow provinces.
"Kiev launched a terrorist attack using helicopter-type unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting a military airport in Novgorod province," the Russian military announced on August 19. Novgorod is located in northwestern Russia, several hundred kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
Moscow said the attack occurred at around 10am (2pm Hanoi time) at the Soltsy military airport. The Russian military shot down the UAV with small arms fire. The attack damaged a military aircraft and caused a fire in the base's parking lot. The fire was quickly brought under control.
"The situation in the region is stable and under control. We have taken all necessary measures. Kiev will pay the price for these actions," said Governor Andrey Nikitin of Novgorod region.

The Russian Defense Ministry on the same day recorded UAV attacks targeting Moscow and Belgorod provinces.
The attack in Moscow was intercepted by the air defense jamming system. The UAV crashed in a residential area near Putilkovo, a suburb of the capital. Russia also announced that it had shot down the UAV in Belgorod, close to the border with Ukraine.
The two attacks did not cause any casualties or material damage. Russia has recorded many UAV attacks on its territory in recent months, accusing Ukraine of being the mastermind, but Kiev has not accepted responsibility.
On August 18, a UAV was shot down over Moscow and crashed into a building in the city center. The incident disrupted operations at the Russian capital's civilian airports.
