Safe tea production in Hanoi

If in the past many mountainous areas of Hanoi had an underdeveloped economy, now thanks to safe tea production, people have escaped poverty and become well-off.

Hanoi currently has more than 1,800 hectares of tea, mainly concentrated in mountainous areas, of which Ba Trai (Suoi Hai commune) has the largest area, about 500 - 600 hectares with a variety of varieties such as Shan Tuyet, LDP1, PH8...

Previously, Ba Trai people often cultivated tea according to traditional practices, without paying attention to quality and food safety factors, resulting in low selling prices and poor economic efficiency. Realizing that, in 2024, Ba Trai General Agricultural Service Cooperative coordinated with Ba Vi Agricultural Service Center to implement a tea production model according to VietGAP standards on an area of 5 hectares. Participating in this model, farmers apply a common technical process from care, fertilization, pesticide spraying, harvesting to preliminary processing and processing.

Mr. Duong Van Huyen - Director of the Cooperative said that instead of manually kneading and roasting tea in a pan, which causes uneven quality and sometimes leaves a smoky smell when drinking, many gardeners have invested in buying tea kneading and roasting machines to both stabilize quality and ensure food safety. In addition to purchasing raw materials, the Cooperative also builds a brand, makes the origin transparent with Qrcode, brings products to participate in the OCOP program of Hanoi City and is evaluated and ranked 4 stars. Since then, the reputation of Ba Trai tea has increased day by day, not only consumed through traditional sales channels but also through e-commerce channels. On average, each family processes 15-20 kg of dry tea per day, with a selling price of 250-300,000 VND/kg, they have an income of several million VND. The tea tree itself has contributed to the average income per capita in 2024 of Ba Trai people reaching 73 million VND/year.

Similar to Ba Trai, in another cradle of tea in Hanoi, Trung Gia commune, there have recently been major changes in production methods. Small farmers no longer produce and consume on a fragmented basis as before, but have known how to link together to form groups, cooperatives, concentrate production, apply science and technology, cultivate according to VietGAP standards, organic orientation, ensure food safety, and build brands to increase value.

Ms. Dao Thi Quy - Director of Bac Son Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative said that by applying science and technology, tea productivity has increased to 5 tons/ha, equivalent to about 1 ton of dry tea. No longer sold raw as before, the dry tea of the Cooperative is professionally designed with packaging, labels, packaging, and a Qrcode to trace its origin. Therefore, the product has been recognized by the Jury of the OCOP program and ranked 4 stars. Tea trees currently bring an average income of 250 - 300 million VND/ha/year to farmers in Trung Gia, 3 - 4 times higher than many other crops.

In addition to cultivating 1 hectare of tea for her family, Ms. Tran Thi Lam also rents land from neighboring households to expand the area. The formerly wild hill has now been turned green by endless rows of tea. During the season, her whole family participates in picking tea, at peak times they can achieve a yield of 200 kg, earning more than 1 million VND per day.

According to the orientation of Hanoi's agricultural sector, the city will work with tea-growing communes to review and develop plans to replant tea trees and build one or two raw material areas that meet export standards. Instead of chasing output, tea areas such as Trung Gia, Ba Trai... will switch to growing high-quality varieties, producing according to VietGAP processes, organically, increasing the safe production rate to 20-30% of the total area in the coming time. Strive to increase the amount of products exported to demanding markets such as Europe, the Middle East...
