Producing green vegetables to serve the year-end market

In the last months of the year, the demand for green vegetables and safe fruits and vegetables has increased sharply. In all production areas in the province, farmers and cooperatives are urgently planting many types of winter vegetables, ensuring supply to serve the market before, during and after Tet.

Currently, the price of green vegetables has increased sharply due to the impact of weather and reduced supply. Some types of leafy vegetables and spices have increased 2-3 times compared to before, causing the cost of people's meals to increase. In this context, cooperatives and concentrated vegetable production areas in the province play an important role in proactively sourcing, contributing to limiting price fluctuations in the local market, ensuring people have a safe and stable source of vegetables.

In Chieng Mai commune, the production atmosphere is taking place urgently these days. In the fields of mustard greens, kohlrabi, and cauliflower, people are taking advantage of harvesting the old crop and planting the new crop in time to serve the year-end market. Taking us to visit the cauliflower garden that has just taken root, Ms. Hua Thi Uan, village 2, Chieng Mai commune, shared: My family has nearly 2,000 m² of land specializing in growing winter vegetables. To proactively produce output, we carefully prepare the soil, apply organic fertilizer, and continuously plant intercrops, so we almost always have vegetables to harvest. From the beginning of the season until now, traders have placed stable orders, and we have consumed all the harvest. This year, the temperature has dropped, so I have increased the base cover with sugarcane mulch to keep the soil warm and moist, helping the plants recover quickly after the cold. Thanks to that, the vegetable crops grow evenly, ensuring supply to serve the market.

According to households, to ensure stable vegetable production, households prioritize vegetable varieties with short growing periods and easy consumption. At the same time, they apply the technique of planting in different seasons, limiting simultaneous planting to avoid being passive in production. Many households expand the area of net houses, cover with plastic, increase the use of organic fertilizers and biological products to improve the quality of vegetables.

Together with farmers, vegetable growing cooperatives are focusing on production, ensuring stable supply for the year-end market. At Tien Son Agricultural Cooperative, Chieng Mung Commune, 21 cooperative members maintain nearly 7 hectares of vegetables, with an average output of 560 tons/year. Since the beginning of October, the cooperative has proactively planted nearly 20 hectares of vegetables, including kohlrabi, cabbage, cauliflower, and tomatoes, arranged according to the planting schedule.

Mr. Pham Van Dau, Deputy Director of the Cooperative, shared: The severe cold spells since the beginning of November have slowed the growth of some vegetables, but we have promptly implemented measures to cover and use biological fertilizers to stimulate plant recovery. The Cooperative produces according to safe processes, organic fertilizers and biological pesticides are used throughout, and many businesses have signed early consumption contracts. This year, the Cooperative is expected to supply more than 100 tons of vegetables to serve the Tet market. Spreading production not only helps stabilize prices, but also ensures that products delivered to consumers are always fresh and delicious.

Along with large production areas, clean agricultural models are accelerating. The 26/3 Green Agriculture Cooperative, Chieng Sinh Ward, is considered a bright spot with a closed production - consumption chain "from farm to table", ensuring 5 no's: no herbicides, no growth stimulants, no preservatives, no use of banned substances and no pesticide residue exceeding the threshold. Currently, the Cooperative is regularly supplying clean vegetables to 1 hospital, 13 schools and 4 green stalls at markets. On the occasion of Lunar New Year, the Cooperative plans to bring to the market about 20 tons of clean vegetables of all kinds, all of which are strictly quality controlled.

Farmers install water-saving irrigation systems to protect and care for winter vegetables in cold conditions.

Ms. Hoang Thi Tham, Deputy Director of the Cooperative, informed: To prepare for the increased consumption demand during Tet, the Cooperative has adjusted the planting schedule and implemented alternating planting to proactively source goods every day. We are cultivating 14 hectares in Chieng Sinh ward and Chieng Mung commune, including 5 hectares of greenhouses. At this time, although the market price of vegetables tends to increase, thanks to proactively controlling output, the Cooperative still maintains stable prices, creating confidence for consumers.

This winter-spring crop, the whole province plans to plant about 3,700 hectares of various vegetables. Localities have proactively prepared seeds and materials, expanded the area of greenhouses and instructed farmers to implement measures to protect crops in extreme weather conditions. Ms. Pham Thi Lan, Deputy Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, assessed: At this time, there is a risk of frost and severe cold, the Department has instructed localities to closely monitor weather developments, strengthen measures to prevent and control pests and diseases, cover with plastic, and apply water-saving technology to reduce the impact of cold. The sowing and harvesting schedule is also calculated appropriately, both to ensure the supply of vegetables for Tet and to complete the harvest before March 2026 to plant the spring crop in time.

With the initiative of farmers, cooperatives and close guidance of the agricultural sector, winter vegetable production in the province has been implemented synchronously and effectively. The supply of green vegetables to serve the market during the Lunar New Year 2026 is forecasted to be abundant and of good quality, contributing to price stabilization and meeting people's consumption needs. This is a positive signal, creating peace of mind for producers, helping people prepare for a full and safe Tet season.
