When arranging university admission wishes in 2025, what should candidates pay attention to?

(Dan Tri) - After knowing the 2025 high school graduation exam scores, candidates need to carefully consider arranging their university admission wishes to increase their chances of admission and match their career orientation.

Benchmarks likely to fall

Analysis of this year's score distribution shows that, except for physics, where the average score increased slightly, most of the remaining subjects decreased. Most notably, math dropped from 6.45 to 4.78 - the lowest level in recent years. Chemistry and English also recorded a sharp decrease in the percentage of excellent scores.

Based on these changes, admissions officers predict that the admission score based on the 2025 high school graduation exam score will decrease by an average of 1 to 3 points, depending on the major and combination.

Specifically, the majors using the combination A00 (math, physics, chemistry), B00 (math, chemistry, biology) and D01 (math, literature, English) are the groups with the highest possibility of decreasing scores.

In which, block B00 may decrease further due to the small number of candidates and low score distribution of subjects.

On the contrary, the average score of literature and geography is still relatively high, so the standard score of block C will fluctuate little, may decrease slightly or remain the same.

The admission scores of other admission methods must be converted to the equivalent of the high school graduation exam scores in 2025, which also tends to be lower than in 2024.

However, according to the score distribution analysis, this year's exam has a high level of differentiation, but the number of candidates achieving high scores in each subject is still relatively high. Therefore, the benchmark scores at top schools and "hot" majors will not change much.

At present, some schools have released predicted benchmark scores.

Foreign Language University, Vietnam National University, Hanoi gives predicted scores for majors in the range of 19-25 points.

The highest score for English and Chinese pedagogy majors is around 23-25 according to high school graduation exam scores.

The school predicts the highest standard score based on the ability assessment test is 120-130 points and 24.75-26.5 points based on the transcript review method.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology gives predicted scores for majors, the lowest is 19 points.

Majors like Computer Science , Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (advanced programs) are expected to score between 19 and above 27.8 points.

The groups of Computer Engineering, Global ICT, Cyber Security, Control Engineering - Automation, Microelectronics and Nanotechnology, and Vietnam - Japan Information Technology can range from 26.5 to 28 points.

Some majors such as Business Administration (in conjunction with Troy University), Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Chinese for Science, Engineering and Technology are predicted to have a benchmark score of around 19 points.

Thus, compared to 2024, the predicted benchmark scores of leading majors such as Computer Science and other engineering and IT majors only decreased slightly. Associated and less popular majors tend to decrease sharply, about 2-3 points lower than 2024.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Le Dinh Tung, Vice Principal of Hanoi Medical University, the benchmark scores of the above majors will not change much. The lower majors may decrease, the lower the benchmark scores last year, the greater the decrease.

How to organize your wishes effectively

According to Ms. Doan Thi Tra, lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy and in charge of admissions at Sheffield Hallam University, candidates can divide their wishes according to the strategy of "3 groups - 1 goal".

Group 1 is high aspirations. This group includes your favorite majors and schools but has a slightly higher admission score than your current ability. You should put 1-2 aspirations in this group at the top of the list.

Group 2 is the medium choice. This group includes majors and schools that are suitable for your actual academic ability and have a high chance of being accepted. This is the group that should have the largest number of choices, about 3-4 choices, arranged in the middle position.

Group 3 is your sure choice. This group includes majors and schools with admission scores lower than your ability, ensuring a chance of passing if you fail the above choices. You need to have at least 1-2 choices in this group.

In addition, she also said that candidates should arrange their preferences in order of preference because the Ministry of Education and Training only considers from the first to the last preference in the order in which candidates register.

“You shouldn’t put easy schools in a position too high just because you “want to be sure of passing”, because if you pass that school, you won’t be considered for the next choices, even if the next choice is better,” she said.

Avoid the risk of total slippage

Ms. Tran Thu Thuy, a lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy, who has participated in the admissions process, emphasized: "Candidates should not rank their preferences only in order of previous year's benchmark scores because the benchmark scores may fluctuate each year."

Regarding risk prevention, Ms. Thuy said candidates need to pay attention to the following:

First, candidates need to submit complete information on time, avoiding confusion about major codes and school codes.

Second, you should not delete your application after it has been registered, unless there is a really solid reason.

Third, candidates should consider carefully before arranging their preferences. They should not choose a major based on their friends or parents. They should prioritize majors that match their abilities, strengths and interests.

Finally, candidates need to carefully study the admission regulations, admission combinations and additional conditions, if any.

This is the key stage that determines the candidate's chance of being admitted to university. Registration time is from July 16 to 5:00 p.m. on July 28. Candidates are allowed to register, adjust, and add admission wishes an unlimited number of times.
