Ms. Cao Thi Chien, Tan Phu commune, Vinh Long province said that her family had just harvested 6 tons of durian from a garden of over 2,000 square meters, selling it for 56,000 VND/kg. At the same time last year, Ms. Chien sold it for 110,000 VND/kg. The sharp drop in durian prices has caused gardeners to suffer a "big loss" compared to last year. According to Ms. Chien, in recent years, gardeners in Vinh Long have applied new techniques and farming methods to make durian produce off-season fruit. This method has helped farmers avoid drought and salinity, and sell it for a higher price than in the normal season. However, this year's off-season durian price has dropped after deducting the high cost of processing off-season fruit, and gardeners have almost no profit.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, Tan Phu commune, Vinh Long province shared that the purchase price of off-season durian is high, but currently the price is only half of previous years. On average, the investment cost for 1kg of commercial durian, gardeners invest from 45,000-55,000 VND/kg. With an area of 4,000m2 of durian garden of his family preparing to harvest, he expects the price to increase in the coming time to make a profit.
According to durian traders in Vinh Long province, currently due to the impact of slow domestic consumption, the amount of durian that meets export standards is very small due to the influence of high tides and unfavorable weather.

According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province, the whole province has more than 6,000 hectares of durian growing area. This is a specialty crop with high economic value of the province. Growing durian for off-season fruit has brought about efficiency and has been applied by gardeners for many years. Although the price is currently low, it can also be a temporary fluctuation, durian applying the technique of growing off-season fruit is still more effective, avoiding saltwater intrusion compared to growing off-season fruit. In the context of increasingly severe climate change and saltwater intrusion, farmers proactively switching to off-season production is not only a temporary solution but also opens up a sustainable direction, achieving high economic efficiency.
Currently, the agricultural sector encourages farmers to participate in cooperatives and durian growing cooperatives to have close links with purchasing enterprises, stabilize prices and product output, and bring sustainable efficiency to durian trees. Along with that, localities strengthen the construction of growing area codes and packing facility codes to serve the official export of durian to international markets.
