There will be massive layoffs in the US government.

In an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy laid out plans for massive cuts to the U.S. government . Musk and Ramaswamy will head a new advisory board on government efficiency (DOGE) in the Trump 2.0 administration.

“The two of us will advise DOGE to pursue three main types of reforms: deregulation, administrative cuts, and cost savings. We will focus specifically on driving change through executive action based on existing laws rather than through new laws.”

They argue that cutting regulations will lead to corresponding cuts in the government workforce. “The massive reduction of federal regulations provides a logical basis for massive layoffs across the entire federal bureaucracy,” the two wrote in an editorial.

As for the protections that could prevent Mr. Trump from firing federal workers, Musk and Ramaswamy said the purpose of these measures is to protect employees from political retaliation, “but the law allows for layoffs that don’t target specific employees. It gives the president more authority to set administrative rules. That authority is very broad.”

US government officials are mobilizing in the face of massive cuts, Reuters reported. They are reportedly hiring lawyers and preparing publicity campaigns, while hoping Congress will step in.

The editorial appeared to address skepticism about Musk and Ramaswamy's ability to change.

As an outside government commission, it would be limited to an advisory capacity, meaning the commission could face a number of obstacles from within the executive branch as well as Congress, experts told The Hill.

But Mr Musk’s close relationship with the president-elect could have an impact. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO played a key role in Mr Trump’s campaign, donating millions of dollars to a political action group (PAC) supporting him.

Since Mr Trump’s decisive victory over Vice President Harris earlier this month, the billionaire tech mogul has been inseparable from the president-elect, and was even mentioned in Mr Trump’s victory speech.

Musk has also spent much of his time at his Palm Beach, Florida, resort over the past two weeks, reportedly weighing Trump’s cabinet picks and attending meetings, including with world leaders.

He also hosted Mr Trump in Texas to watch the SpaceX rocket launch.
