Born in 1906 in Saint Petersburg, Shostakovich is remembered as a storyteller of sound. In his works, Shostakovich left behind genuine slices of humanity: ironic laughter mixed with sighs, idealism mixed with tragedy... all creating a musical legacy that is both great and humane.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Shostakovich neither praised nor mourned, but engaged in dialogue with his own world . It was this spirit that inspired the SSO’s November concert, “Shostakovich – The Untold Story,” as the orchestra sought to bring audiences to Russian music with empathy and reflection.
The concert program is a combination of three musical worlds: Glinka's romantic fantasy; the narrative, quiet of late Shostakovich; and the brilliant satirical spirit of young Shostakovich.

The concert will open with Waltz-Fantasy by Mikhail Glinka – the father of Russian classical music. The waltz’s sparkling, graceful melodies evoke a sense of peace, a time before the war. Such clarity is the perfect start for the journey the audience will take upstream – from the brilliance of Glinka to the complex inner world of Shostakovich.
The centerpiece is the Chamber Symphony in C minor, Op. 110a – one of Shostakovich’s most narrative works. Written in 1960, it is the clearest “spiritual portrait” of himself – at once melancholy and humane. The music here is not angry but cold, not lamenting but profound.
If Chamber Symphony is a late self-portrait, Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Trumpet and Strings carries the spirit of youth: brilliant, satirical, but no less profound.
In the upcoming program, pianist Luu Duc Anh and Japanese trumpeter Daiki Yamanoi will take on the solo role alongside the SSO. Piano and trumpet - two instruments that rarely share the same "lead role" - will converse, debate, and even tease each other through music.
Luu Duc Anh's playing is full of power and emotional depth. Meanwhile, Daiki Yamanoi - with his bright and flexible trumpet tone promises to bring a sharp counterbalance.
From Glinka's innocent dream to Shostakovich's self-questioning, from silence to explosion, the concert "Shostakovich - Untold Stories" promises to bring the audience unforgettable emotions.
