Tighten controls on animal transportation.

(GLO) - Faced with the complex developments of African swine fever in many provinces, especially border areas, Gia Lai province has quickly deployed 4 inter-agency animal disease control checkpoints at key gateways.

Notably, the province has also recorded two outbreaks of African swine fever, making the risk of this disease spreading even more apparent.

Establish a line of defense against the epidemic from the "outer perimeter".

On July 16th, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 747/QD-UBND establishing four inter-agency animal quarantine checkpoints on important national highways, including: Binh De (National Highway 1, Hoai Nhon Bac Ward), Song An (National Highway 19, Cuu An Commune), Ia Khuol (National Highway 14, Ia Khuol Commune), and Ia Le (National Highway 14, Ia Le Commune).

According to Mr. Huynh Ngoc Diep, Head of the Livestock and Veterinary Sub-Department (Department of Agriculture and Environment), these checkpoints are located at points bordering provinces at high risk of outbreaks such as Quang Ngai and Dak Lak, operating 24/7 with coordination between veterinary forces and traffic police. At these checkpoints, authorities check documents, disinfect vehicles, and handle cases of violations of regulations on the transportation of animals and animal products.

Since the beginning of the year, the western region of the province, a key livestock farming area with many large-scale projects, has effectively controlled the disease thanks to close coordination between specialized agencies, businesses, and the people. However, given the increasingly widespread outbreak of African swine fever, three animal quarantine checkpoints have been deployed in the western region alone.

At the Ia Khươl quarantine checkpoint (bordering Quảng Ngãi province - where the disease is developing complicatedly), functional forces are on duty day and night despite bad weather conditions due to the peak of the rainy season. To date, the checkpoint has inspected 21 vehicles transporting animals, all of which had complete quarantine documents, and no violations or transport of animals of unknown origin have been detected.

At the Ia Le quarantine checkpoint (bordering Dak Lak province), Mr. Huynh Tien Vuong, a veterinary officer, said: “To date, the checkpoint has inspected 28 shipments, including 25 shipments of pigs totaling 2,573 animals. All shipments complied with quarantine regulations and were thoroughly disinfected before continuing their journey.”

In particular, the Binh De quarantine checkpoint has been identified as a key monitoring point. Mr. Do Van Luat, Head of the Cu Mong Animal Quarantine Station, the unit in charge of this checkpoint, said: “On average, the checkpoint inspects about 5 vehicles carrying animals and animal products each day, mainly from northern provinces. From July 16 to 20, we inspected 17 vehicles carrying 5,154 head of livestock, mainly pigs into the province; and 124 vehicles carrying 8,226 head of livestock, 104,500 chicks, and 15,907 kg of animal products from the province to the North. All have quarantine reports, are sealed with lead seals, and ensure veterinary hygiene in accordance with regulations.”

Comprehensive control and protection of the livestock industry.

The province not only established quarantine checkpoints but also implemented a comprehensive set of solutions to control the disease.

The Provincial People's Committee requested the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine to coordinate with commune-level authorities to widely disseminate information to the public on how to identify and prevent African swine fever; and to strengthen veterinary hygiene inspections at farms, slaughterhouses, and animal trading establishments. In addition, quarantine officers will not only be stationed at checkpoints but will also conduct mobile patrols on branch roads, especially at night, to promptly detect vehicles attempting to evade checkpoints. Vehicles transporting animals will have their documents and animal condition checked; suspected cases will be immediately isolated at the checkpoint and not allowed into the area.

Mr. Huynh Ngoc Diep added: “After nearly a week of implementation, all checkpoints have strictly followed the inspection and handling procedures. The awareness of vehicle owners and drivers is quite good, and no violations have been detected so far. However, we will not be complacent and will continue to tighten control, especially in areas bordering epidemic zones.”

Along with establishing new checkpoints, the province continues to operate the Chu Ngoc Animal Disease Control Station (Phu Tuc commune) and the Cu Mong Animal Disease Control Station (Quy Nhon Tay ward). These two stations play a crucial role in completing the quarantine network, closing the disease prevention line in the western and southern gateway areas – areas with many large-scale livestock farms and a high volume of animal transport vehicles entering and exiting.

Proactive disease control aims not only to protect livestock from infection but also to maintain the livelihoods of thousands of livestock farmers and ensure stability for the province's agricultural sector amidst the unpredictable developments of African swine fever. According to Mr. Huynh Ngoc Diep, in the coming period, authorities will continue to strengthen inspections and strictly handle illegal animal transportation. Simultaneously, they will intensify coordination with relevant agencies and local authorities to tighten management of slaughtering and animal consumption, ensuring disease safety from origin to consumption.
