Singapore's Minister for Digital and Information Development Josephine Teo said on September 5 that the demand for a workforce that is both highly skilled and proficient in using AI is growing. In the Lion City, 3 out of 4 workers use AI tools at work.
Speaking at a technology event, Ms. Teo cited the upcoming Singapore Digital Economy 2025 Report, in which 85% of workers who have used AI affirmed that this tool helps improve work efficiency and quality.
Given that reality, Ms. Teo emphasized, Singapore needs to train “parallel” talents – those who are both good at expertise in specific fields and also work effectively with AI. The government will focus on fully equipping workers with skills to make the most of AI solutions, not only in the technology industry but also in non-technology industries.
According to Ms. Teo, Singapore will cooperate with professional associations, such as accounting and human resources, to identify and develop necessary skills to help workers apply AI more effectively.
Also on this topic, in the Message issued on August 9 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of National Day, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized that the country needs to maintain cohesion, determination and outstanding performance, and must "move faster, adapt better and innovate smarter".
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said that Singapore must embrace new technologies, especially AI and automation, to effectively apply them across the economy. The government will create favorable conditions for people, workers and businesses to maximize the potential of technology and enhance their competitive advantage.
Singapore was among the first countries to announce its AI development plan in 2019. In December 2023, Singapore announced the National AI Strategy 2.0 - an updated version of the country's AI initiatives, which outlines roadmaps for the economy to apply and exploit AI.
According to Pannie Sia, Director of Workday, a human resources and financial software provider in Southeast Asia, maintaining investment in AI and machine learning will ensure Singapore's role in technological advancements, strengthening its position as an attractive hub for businesses and talent in the context of countries around the world increasingly promoting digitalization.
