The information was shared at the seminar "Incorporating gender and gender equality content into college and university teacher training programs - Implementing the National Strategy on gender equality in the field of education and training for the period 2021-2030", organized by the Ministry of Education and Training at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education today (November 14).
"Gender prejudice still exists, from career choices…"
The seminar was held in the spirit of implementing Plan No. 1586/KH-BGDDT dated September 18, 2025 of the Ministry of Education and Training on implementing the project "Incorporating teaching on gender and gender equality into the training program for college-level teachers in preschool education and university level in the period 2024-2030". The goal of the project is that by the 2025-2026 school year, all teacher training institutions nationwide will include gender and gender equality content in their official training programs, ensuring that the teaching staff, materials, methods and mechanisms are standardized, modern and linked to the requirements of social development.
At the seminar, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), said that gender equality is one of the core values of a civilized society and is also an important goal in the national sustainable development strategy, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In recent years, Vietnam has achieved many remarkable achievements in this field. However, according to Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, gender stereotypes still exist in many aspects of life: from career choices, learning and employment opportunities, to the participation of children and adolescents in social activities - especially in schools.
"We all understand that schools not only impart knowledge, but also form children's awareness, attitudes and behaviors. Therefore, gender education and gender equality need to be implemented scientifically , systematically and appropriately at each level of education, especially at the general education level, to create the foundation for a fair, progressive and humane society," Dr. Thu Thuy shared.

The teaching staff plays a decisive role.
The Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) said that to achieve this, the teaching staff plays a decisive role. Teachers are not only the ones who inspire but also the role models who guide students in their values. Therefore, improving teachers’ capacity to effectively integrate gender education and gender equality into the curriculum is an inevitable task.
From there, Dr. Thu Thuy believes that teacher training institutions become the key force. Building and adjusting training programs, professional development, along with developing teaching materials and instructional materials suitable to the specific characteristics of the subject are extremely important tasks. These efforts will help teachers confidently implement gender education and gender equality in an effective, practical and sustainable way.
Speaking at the seminar, Prof. Dr. Huynh Van Son, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, emphasized: "We deeply understand that teachers are the core force in shaping social values. Therefore, equipping today's teacher training students with knowledge and skills on gender equality as well as non-pedagogical majors of the school is to create a future generation of citizens who know how to respect, tolerate and be fair."
Professor Son also said that the University has had many initiatives in building a matrix of requirements as well as content on gender and gender equality, integrating it into the teacher training program and will continue to invest in research and perfect the most effective model to implement this project in the school.
Opinions at the discussion of the Ministry of Education and Training at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education also exchanged and shared domestic and international experiences on integrating gender equality in teacher training programs at college and university levels; discussed the roadmap and methods of implementing the project at teacher training institutions; suggested specific solutions to promote lecturers' capacity, innovate programs and spread the values of equality, respect and tolerance in the school environment.
