At this tournament, world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz unexpectedly lost to Cameron Norrie in the second round. Therefore, Sinner only needs to win the championship to gain enough points to rise to the world No. 1 position in the latest ATP rankings.

In the quarter-final match that took place in the early morning of October 31, Sinner easily won 2-0 (6-3, 6-3) against No. 5 seed Ben Shelton. This means that Sinner is only two wins away from No. 1. His next opponent in the semi-finals will be Alexander Zverev or Daniil Medvedev.

"I don't think much about the rankings at the moment. It all depends on how I play," Sinner told Reuters.

We play day by day, every day there are very difficult challenges coming and I just try to focus on each game."

Sinner (24 years old) has played a total of 400 singles matches in his career, winning 314 matches with 22 championships, including 3 Grand Slam titles.

The Italian finished 2024 as world number one but lost the title to Alcaraz. Now he has a chance to reclaim his "throne".
