As a moderate-intensity physical activity, cycling does not put much pressure on the joints, while helping to improve the circulatory system and strengthen the cardiovascular system. With just a bicycle, the elderly can exercise at any time of the day without the need for a yard or complicated equipment. The convenience, the ability to move the whole body and the flexibility in intensity make this sport increasingly popular.
Having been cycling for nearly 5 years, Mr. Tran Viet Cay, in Dong Hoi ward, has always maintained a regular daily cycling routine of 20km to 30km. Mr. Cay said that he previously suffered from a herniated disc, which limited his mobility. However, after a period of persistent cycling, his health has improved significantly.
“Before, I had constant back pain, but now it’s gone. I feel lighter, eat better, and feel happier,” Mr. Cay shared. Not only practicing personally, Mr. Cay is also active in the Dong Phu Intergenerational Cycling Club, which brings together people who love this sport in the area. He is currently the Vice Chairman of the Club, regularly encouraging members to maintain their practice and together spread a healthy lifestyle.
Not only Mr. Cay, many other elderly people also find joy in this sport . A typical example is Mr. Hoang Van Phung, former Chairman of the Dong Phu Intergenerational Cycling Club. Although he is over 80 years old, he still regularly cycles every day with the members.
Having been involved in this sport for nearly 8 years, Mr. Phung said: “I feel my physical and mental health have improved significantly since cycling. My body moves regularly, my mind is relaxed, life is more enjoyable, especially I have more friends to chat and share with every day.”

The movement “All people exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho” has been spreading strongly, receiving enthusiastic response from the elderly. In many localities, spontaneous cycling groups or organized cycling clubs have been formed, becoming places for active and healthy activities.
In addition, cycling clubs also regularly organize and participate in grassroots races and exchanges between branches and units such as Mobi Run Quang Binh; Dong Hoi City Open Cycling Race (old); Dong Ha City Open Cycling Race (old)... contributing to creating a vibrant and widespread competitive and training atmosphere.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Doan, an elderly member of the Dong Phu Intergenerational Cycling Club, shared: “Joining the Club not only helps me exercise every day but also creates conditions for us to contribute our strength and intelligence to the community. We regularly organize cycling sessions to protect the environment and encourage people to comply with traffic regulations. At this age, being able to exercise and participate in useful activities like this makes me feel healthy and live a meaningful life.”
Not only does it benefit health, the cycling movement also contributes to connecting the elderly with society, helping them continue to contribute and spread positive life values in their families and society. With the spirit of “living happily, living healthily, living usefully”, the elderly have been showing a proactive and positive role in modern life.
For them, cycling is not just a sport, but also a scientific way of living, living positively to be a support for their children and the community. On each familiar route, each bicycle turn is the rhythm of life, a strong affirmation: "old age can still be healthy, can still be happy, and can always live beautifully".
Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Phu Son said: “Cycling is a simple, low-cost sport but brings great benefits to health and spirit, especially suitable for the elderly. Over the years, the sports industry has always encouraged the development of grassroots sports clubs, including the model of cycling clubs for the elderly.
In the coming time, the Department will continue to coordinate with the Association of the Elderly, localities, organizations and unions to replicate cycling models suitable for each region. At the same time, create conditions for the elderly to have more playgrounds and exchange activities to spread the message of living happily, living healthily and living usefully to the whole society.
