Student growth is more than just grades

Change your thinking positively, with the concept that sending your children to school is not only for knowledge and grades, but more importantly, it is an opportunity to help your children develop emotions, love, sharing, and responsibility for themselves and those around them.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen, Vice Principal of Trang Dai Primary School (in Trang Dai Ward) shared: “The school’s Board of Directors and some parents just had a meaningful trip to the flood-affected areas of Dak Lak province, bringing nearly 158 million VND and many school supplies, clothes, and food to give to students affected by the flood. This is the result of donations from parents and students of the school, stemming from love and sharing with people in the flood-affected areas.”

Lessons of love

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen said: When the Central provinces suffered damage due to storms and floods, the school mobilized teachers, parents and students to support with all their hearts. Some students received money from their parents, some opened their piggy banks and brought them to school to support. Some students, on the first day of the school year, due to difficult circumstances, were given a scholarship of 500,000 VND by the school. When their fellow countrymen suffered from natural disasters, their parents were willing to give them 200,000 VND to share with the people in the storm and flood areas. This is the companionship of parents and the school in helping students form emotions, know how to live with love and share.

Meanwhile, Ms. Pham Thi Hoa, a parent whose child is studying in grade 5 at Kim Dong Primary School (in Long Khanh ward), said: Not long ago, when returning home from school, her child emotionally told the whole family about the storm and flood situation in the Central region, many families no longer have homes, many students cannot go to school. Listening to her child's story, Ms. Hoa was also moved, because her child was really emotional about what was happening around him. Not stopping there, her child also asked to use his piggy bank to buy books and school supplies to send to students in the flood-affected areas.

At Huynh Van Nghe Secondary School (in Xuan Loc commune), comprehensive education for students in knowledge, skills and ethics is always considered important by the school.

Mr. Huynh Van, the school's principal, shared: "In addition to providing knowledge, the school also attaches great importance to helping students develop emotions, love, sharing and responsibility. For example, when a student is in a really difficult situation and the school launches a campaign, the whole school is ready to support, maybe each student only has 5-10 thousand VND. Or like on Saturday, the students come to school to participate in Green Saturday, contributing to making their school greener - cleaner - more beautiful."

At Lac Hong Bilingual Primary and Secondary School (in Tran Bien ward), thematic activities and learning projects have helped students cultivate emotions, sense of responsibility and dynamism.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuat, Vice Principal of the school, said: Helping students have a solid knowledge foundation is very important, but equally important is helping them form ethics, a healthy lifestyle, positive thinking and responsibility. For example, a thematic activity on gratitude, through sharing the famous song Mother's Diary by musician Nguyen Van Chung, aroused in the students many emotions of gratitude to their parents and their upbringing. Or like the trips the school takes students to visit social protection centers, where there are orphans, lacking the care of their parents, thereby helping students see how happy they are to have their parents always by their side and accompanying them.

More “open classes” are needed.

Since the official implementation of the General Education Program in 2018, experiential education activities in schools have had the opportunity to develop more widely. The program has helped students apply knowledge to solve problems in life.

The education sector is facing a huge challenge in fulfilling its mission of caring for, educating and comprehensively developing students in terms of morality, intelligence, physical fitness and aesthetics. To address these core issues, the education sector is comprehensively innovating teaching and learning methods, considering students as the center of education, while also having the cooperation of families, Youth Union, Association and Pioneer organizations in schools and residential areas.

Mr. Nguyen Van Vien, Principal of Nguyen Binh Khiem High School (in Nhon Trach Commune) said: In the era of internet and social network development with many negative aspects, students are being strongly affected. They can be influenced by a more selfish lifestyle, live less emotionally, and care less about others. Therefore, family and school must play an even more important role in protecting and helping them form emotions, love and responsibility. "Open lessons" for students to learn, share and discuss their responsibilities to themselves and society are the best way for students to become more mature.

At the Career Counseling Program for 12th grade students, organized by Tuoi Tre Newspaper in May 2025, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Nam, Vice Principal of the University of Education (Hanoi National University) shared: The 2018 General Education Program has allowed schools to expand their educational space and teaching methods. Instead of lessons being confined in the classroom and only in textbooks, schools can design experiential activities in the classroom, in the schoolyard and outside the school. In addition to school teachers, experts with knowledge in many fields can be invited to share with students, thereby helping them gain deeper understanding, helping them form more positive emotions and thinking.

Faced with new challenges regarding the role of education in the new era, at the 2025 Educational Science Conference with the theme Education in the era of national development held recently, Professor Le Anh Vinh, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences, said: Education does not simply follow trends or development speed but needs to return to essential issues to build a foundation for Vietnamese people. In addition to helping students acquire knowledge, schools need to help students form ethics, emotions, responsibilities and skills appropriate to Vietnamese culture, which are ethics, love, sharing and sincerity.
