In The Gioi village, Dong Son commune, a model garden is only nearly 500 square meters wide, but the garden owner, Mr. Ha Dinh Huong, has built it into an ornamental area combining aromatic vegetables in different batches. With his diligent hands, the retired cadre who used to work at the People's Council of the old Dong Son district has cleverly arranged the plants in different layers to take advantage of every bit of light. In the far part of the yard, he grows onions and spices with high intensive cultivation, continuously in batches all year round. Practicing organic farming for clean production, he also invested in a modern sprinkler irrigation system, with just a switch, the whole garden is watered instead of human labor. A small area of land in front of the house, but according to the garden owner's calculations, each year it can bring in an income of 40 - 50 million VND for the family, most of all, the rural garden land fund is revived.

Without investing too much money, Mr. Huong has operated the garden production according to the criteria of the competition, so this year he won first prize in the category "Beautiful Garden". Garden owner Ha Dinh Huong shared: "I know that the contest "Beautiful Garden, Effective Farm" has been around for years. This year, I was encouraged to participate. When the rules and scoring criteria were disseminated, I invested in renovating the garden and farming methods towards clean production, ensuring efficiency. I have to learn and invest in applying scientific and technical advances to production stages, arranging and arranging crops reasonably".

Since the beginning of March 2025, the organizing committee of the competition has deployed the basic profile stages, launched and organized the preliminary round, but it was not until the end of November that 7 gardens and 15 farms were "finalized" to qualify for the final round at the provincial level. This year, due to the inability to organize the screening rounds at the grassroots level, for many months, the Provincial Gardening and Farming Association had to ask some members of the former Gardening and Farming Associations of districts, towns and cities to survey, introduce and go to each house to mobilize producers to participate in the competition. After that, the staff of the Provincial Gardening and Farming Association and some members of the jury had to "go on field trips" to the gardens and farms to survey the quality and production efficiency to select models that met the criteria to compete in the provincial final round. Another unforeseen difficulty was that many model gardens following the NTM criteria and efficient, modern farms had been selected, but Thanh Hoa was continuously affected by many storms in the middle of the year, so the models preparing for the competition were damaged, trees were broken, flooded and suffered heavy losses.

According to Mr. Vo Duy Sang, Chairman of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Gardening and Farming Association, Head of the Organizing Committee of the contest: “This year is a special year with special factors. To implement the contest, the Provincial Association has invited 10 members who are retired officials of the former district associations to join the executive board of the provincial garden and farm club. These members are the bridge to inform and mobilize many production facility owners to participate. Initially, we surveyed more than 60 gardens and farms that met the criteria, but after the recent storms, only 22 models were still eligible to be included in the final round list. Fortunately, many garden and farm owners were very excited, overcame many difficulties and limitations, invested in gardens and farms according to the criteria to participate in the contest”.

Overcoming many unfavorable conditions, the final round of the 2025 “Beautiful Garden, Effective Farm” contest was held at the provincial level at the end of November. Contestants presented their good and effective practices and showed videos introducing their production models through a series of criteria set by the judges at the beginning of the year.

Organizing committee members and judges of the contest "Beautiful garden, effective farm" conducted a field survey at a snail farm in Luu Ve commune.

Contestant Nguyen Thi Sanh, 70 years old, from residential group 12, Quang Trung ward, shared: “I have the largest orange farm in the old Bim Son hill area, now in Quang Trung ward, combining livestock farming and growing some other fruit trees. Coming to the contest, listening to other contestants introduce good practices, I “broke out” many things. The contest really became a place to exchange, learn, and share good practices of farm owners like us. It is really meaningful, especially the application of scientific advances to achieve organic, VietGAP, Global GAP standards that I am aiming for”.

The meaning of the contest has been determined by the organizer many years ago and has affirmed its practical effectiveness through the contest seasons. This is a useful playground for farmers and owners of agricultural models, encouraging them to join the agricultural sector in the movement of renovating mixed gardens and building model gardens according to the NTM criteria. The contest criteria also guide producers to gradually develop organic agriculture and circular agriculture associated with sustainable environmental protection.

In fact, Thanh Hoa is the first province in the country to "create" and annually organize the "Beautiful Garden, Effective Farm" contest. Mr. Phan Huy Thong, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Gardening Association, said: "Through 4 seasons of the contest, the leaders of the Vietnam Gardening Association were invited to attend the finals. We noted that each season has a different nuance thanks to the creativity in the organization. The contest has reflected a panoramic picture of rural agriculture, the production situation in the regions of Thanh Hoa. I admire the garden and farm owners who, even though they are 60-70 years old, are still enthusiastic about production, ready to change to apply scientific and technical advances, change to apply modern production methods according to practical requirements, suitable for the contest. Not only in the countryside, there are many models built from barren hills, from dry sandbanks or remote mountains, all of which are creating value and creating more jobs".

According to Mr. Phan Huy Thong, the Politburo and the Government are currently encouraging the development of the private economy. The fact that cooperatives and farm owners are enthusiastically participating in developing production and land value is a great success of the contest.
