Untreated hearing loss has unpredictable health impacts

Hearing loss mainly occurs in older people due to aging. However, it can happen to anyone at any age.

In the US, statistics show that up to 37.5 million people over the age of 18 have hearing problems. Meanwhile, on average, 3 out of 1,000 children in the US have hearing loss in 1 or 2 ears, according to the health website Healthline (US).

Hearing loss makes it difficult for people to communicate, leading to self-isolation and withdrawal from social interactions.

In addition to age, factors such as working conditions and frequent exposure to noise, such as loud sounds from headphones or at music events, also contribute to hearing loss.

If left untreated, hearing loss can negatively impact mental and emotional health, leading to a number of health problems.

A study published in the medical journal The Lancet found that hearing loss increases the risk of dementia. The greater the hearing loss, the higher the risk of dementia.

Accordingly, people with mild hearing loss have a risk of dementia twice as high as normal. This risk in people with moderate and severe hearing loss is three times and five times higher, respectively.

Not only that, untreated hearing loss will negatively affect the patient's clarity and memory, especially the elderly. Because when it is difficult to hear clearly, the patient will have to concentrate more to listen, thereby making the brain unable to concentrate on remembering and understanding words.

Statistics show that more than 90% of people with hearing loss are over 50 years old. Because they cannot hear clearly, they have difficulty communicating with people. Therefore, people with hearing loss tend to be isolated and withdraw from meetings with people.

Because hearing is so important to health, everyone should have their hearing checked regularly, especially those at high risk of hearing loss. Experts recommend getting their hearing checked every 3 to 5 years. People over 60 or who are regularly exposed to loud noises may need to get checked more often, according to Healthline .
