According to the family, while the adults were distracted, the child accidentally started a cinnamon bark peeling machine with a high-speed rotating roller system. Unfortunately, the child's left hand was caught in the machine. After the accident, the child tried to turn off the machine before being discovered by relatives and taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Approximately six hours after the accident, the child was transferred to the National Children's Hospital in a critical condition with severe injuries to the left forearm and hand, with multiple structures crushed.
Doctors in the Emergency and Toxicology Department quickly controlled the bleeding, held a multidisciplinary consultation, and decided to perform emergency surgery that same night to preserve as much hand function as possible for the child.
According to Dr. Nguyen Vu Hoang, a specialist in Orthopedics, this was a very complex injury case with many severe tears and damage to the flexor tendons, blood vessels, and nerves. The team had to choose to restore the most important structures to preserve the basic motor function of the hand.
The surgery lasted over 3 hours. In addition to reconnecting tendons, blood vessels, and nerves, the doctors also reconstructed the tendon-holding system, covered the soft tissues, and rearranged the anatomical structures of the hand.
Following surgery, the child's hand regained its warmth and pink color, and circulation in the fingers improved. Just a few hours after the operation, the child was able to gently move their fingers as instructed by the doctor. After two weeks of treatment, the child recovered well and was discharged from the hospital, although further rehabilitation will be necessary in the future.
Doctors advise families and households engaged in the production of homemade machinery to install fences, shut off power sources, and install safety covers to prevent children from accessing them. In the event of an accident, it is necessary to quickly disconnect the power supply, provide proper first aid to stop bleeding, and take the child to a specialized medical facility as soon as possible to increase the chances of limb preservation.
