Earlier, Vietnamese taekwondo won 1 silver and 2 bronze medals on the first day of competition yesterday. Chau Tuyet Van won the silver medal in the women's individual standard kata under 40 category.
Le Thanh Trung won the bronze medal in the men's individual standard kata under 40. Nguyen Xuan Thanh won the bronze medal in the men's individual creative kata under 30.
Notably, athletes Nguyen Xuan Thanh and Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang also secured the only two tickets in the individual taekwondo event to participate in the 2026 Asian Games in Japan this September.
This is the first time the Asian Games (Asiad) has used performance at the Asian Taekwondo Championships as a basis for selecting athletes to compete, similar to the Olympic Games.
This afternoon, Vietnamese taekwondo will compete in two more events: creative poomsae (doubles) and team poomsae. The team poomsae event has a chance to win a gold medal.
Tomorrow (May 21st), the tournament will begin with the sparring events, which will determine the Vietnamese taekwondo athletes' qualification for the 2026 Asian Games.
