Vietnam Taekwondo will participate in 10 combat events and 4 forms events, aiming to win 4 gold medals. The taekwondo competitions will take place from December 10 to 13 in Bangkok.
At the 32nd SEA Games, the men's team only won 2 gold medals with Pham Dang Quang (63kg) and Ly Hong Phuc (74kg) after 2 consecutive finals against Thailand. In the women's team, despite reaching 4 finals, all were defeated. Truong Thi Kim Tuyen (49kg) and Tran Thi Anh Tuyet (62kg) lost to Thai fighters. Bac Thi Khiem (67kg) lost to her Cambodian opponent, and Nguyen Thi Huong (73kg) lost to her Philippine opponent.
However, the 33rd SEA Games is predicted to not be easy for the opposing team to repeat the achievement of 2 gold medals in the men's tournament, as Thailand is determined to "revenge" the "debt" of losing on home ground. However, Vietnam Taekwondo still believes in its preparation.
With the determination to remake the fighting content to win regional and continental achievements, further to win Olympic tickets and medals, the men's fighting team was assigned to former Iranian player Erfan Heydarl to coach from the beginning of the year instead of a Korean expert. This is because Iran is a strong country in men's fighting, not inferior to Korea.
Most recently, the men's fighting team with 5 fighters Nguyen Hong Trong, Dinh Cong Khoa, Le Tuan, Ly Hong Phuc and Pham Minh Bao Kha and expert Erfan Heydarl went to Iran for training from November 4 to 24 to complete the preparation process for the 33rd SEA Games.
Among them, Nguyen Hong Trong (54kg men) showed great promise to be able to make a breakthrough in Thailand in the near future. Similarly, Le Tuan - the boxer who defeated the reigning champion Pham Dang Quang in the national championship to win a place at the 33rd SEA Games.
The failure at the 32nd SEA Games made the women's team even more determined for this tournament. Five fighters Nguyen Thi Mai, Truong Thi Kim Tuyen, Nguyen Thi Loan, Tran Thi Anh Tuyet and Bac Thi Khiem had a training trip to Korea at the same time as the men's team.
According to the coaching staff, the training period has helped Vietnamese female boxers improve their skills and ensure their confidence to be ready for competition. Because unstable mentality is the barrier that caused Kim Tuyen and Anh Tuyet to fail when facing Thai boxers before.
Meanwhile, the boxing team is still training in Korea and will only return home on November 30. In this year's competition, the boxing team will no longer have Chau Tuyet Van - the female martial artist who has won 6 consecutive SEA Games gold medals since 2013.
However, the goal of coach Nguyen Thanh Huy and his team is still to win 2 gold medals in 4 events: men's standard team, women's team, mixed doubles and creative team.
With generations of well-trained athletes and continuous investment, the taekwondo team is completely confident in achieving its set goals, maintaining its achievement of 2 gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games.
Vietnam Taekwondo Federation offers big rewards

This is a higher bonus than the 32nd SEA Games. In particular, there is an additional bonus for coaches, which was not available in the previous SEA Games. At the 32nd SEA Games, athletes who achieved results were rewarded by VTF with 500 USD (gold medal), 300 USD (silver medal) and 200 USD (bronze medal).
