On June 19, the HCM City Department of Transport Inspectorate coordinated with Tan Son Nhat Police Station and Tan Son Nhat Airport Security to inspect and discover two taxi drivers cheating on fares when transporting passengers.
During the inspection, the authorities discovered that the taxi driver with license plate 51F-595.26 driven by Nguyen Trung Minh had installed an auxiliary switch under the gear lever.
The specialized agency required this person to drive from the international terminal to Tran Quoc Hoan street and back to the international terminal. While the actual fare was 54,000 VND, due to the impact of the auxiliary switch, the amount shown on the meter was 540,000 VND (10 times higher).
The auxiliary switch installed on the taxi makes the taxi fare increase many times compared to the actual price.
The working group has drawn up a record of the driver and vehicle owner's illegal installation of fare meters (installing devices that distort fares).
In addition to this case, on the morning of June 19, the working group also discovered a similar error in the car with license plate 60E-00734 of Saigon Cheap Taxi, a taxi company under Saigon Transport Group Corporation, Binh Thuan branch, driven by Mr. Tran Quoc Tien.
The driver installed an auxiliary switch on the car, each time he entered or changed gear, the fare would increase by 3,000 VND/time. When the driver was asked to test drive from the international terminal to Tran Quoc Hoan street and back to the international terminal, due to the impact on the switch, the fare increased to 420,000 VND.
The Department of Transport Inspectorate said both cases were fined a total of 11 million VND and had their taxi badges revoked for 2 months.
