A passport for Dak Lak's agricultural products.

The digital revolution is transforming the face of agriculture in Dak Lak province, helping farmers and businesses not only enhance their competitiveness but also build a sustainable, transparent, and modern agricultural sector.

Smart Management

At Coffee Company 15 (Ea Tul commune), traditional production management methods using notebooks and pens to record fertilization and irrigation schedules for crops have become a thing of the past. Now, the management of over 650 hectares of coffee plantations in Dak Lak province is streamlined using computers and smartphones.

All data, from cultivation history to crop "health" status, is updated in real time on the production management software system and electronic records. Thanks to the ability to remotely "diagnose" problems, technical staff can precisely regulate water and nutrients for each area, significantly reducing fertilizer and pesticide costs.

Lieutenant Colonel Le Trung Thanh, Director of Coffee Company 15, said: "The shift to digital management is a 'test' of mindset. Digitalization is the key to transparent production, helping businesses understand the 'health' of each plantation plot to make the right investment decisions. In particular, the application of digital technology has brought about a double benefit: reducing labor and material costs by about 20%, ensuring product consistency; and building a scientific work style for officers, soldiers, and workers."

"The electronic production log serves as a database to connect to the national traceability portal, creating a distinct advantage for our 'Soldier's Coffee' brand in conquering demanding markets," Mr. Thanh said.

Not only large businesses, but many farmers and cooperatives are also savvy in applying digital transformation to standardize their products. At the Krong Pac Clean Agricultural Services Cooperative, many of the cooperative's more than 200 hectares of durian trees have been digitized and their coordinates tracked. Mr. Le Van Thanh, a member of the cooperative, shared that caring for his 3 hectares of durian trees has become more convenient thanks to platforms like VNPT Green and Ezfarm. Through these applications, each durian tree has its own identification code and location tracking system. The digital production log helps him accurately track the dates of fertilization and pesticide application directly on his phone.

According to Mr. Mai Dinh Tho, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Krong Pac Clean Agricultural Services Cooperative, the cooperative has 186 members cultivating durian on over 200 hectares. Many members of the cooperative have applied digital technology to manage, care for, and monitor the "health" of their crops, thereby increasing transparency in all stages of production. This transparency provides durian with a clear "identity," helping the cooperative meet the stringent requirements of the market.

Building a digital agricultural ecosystem.

Recognizing agriculture as a pillar of the economy, Dak Lak province has aggressively implemented resolutions on digital transformation, with top priority given to digitizing agricultural data.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province's agricultural sector has been focusing on building a shared database, from soil and hydrological maps to a system for managing planting area codes. To date, in the field of crop production, the province has digitized the traceability of 321 planting area codes and 52 export-guaranteed packaging facilities, and 74 planting area codes meeting domestic traceability requirements; and installed 4 smart pest monitoring stations using iMetos meteorological technology with "wet leaf" sensors to accurately predict disease outbreaks.

Notably, Dak Lak is one of the first 16 provinces nationwide to complete the connection to the national land database, with over 1.84 million land parcels digitized… These efforts not only help to manage the state more accurately but also create a “clean data” foundation that helps Dak Lak's agricultural products expand their export reach and conquer demanding markets.

The province is continuing to promote the application of high technology and digital transformation in brand building, and the development of planting area codes linked to barcodes. This is a key direction for Dak Lak's agricultural products to increasingly enhance their value, bringing sustainable benefits to both farmers and businesses.”

Faced with the challenge from the European Union's Anti-Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the provincial agricultural sector has collaborated with organizations such as IDH, JDE, and Simexco Dak Lak to collect digitized data on coffee-growing households for traceability, meeting the EUDR's non-deforestation assessment requirements for approximately 90,000 out of 214,000 hectares (accounting for about 42% of the province's coffee area).

Mr. Le Duc Huy, Chairman of the Board of Members of Simexco Dak Lak, affirmed that digital data is the "passport" for Dak Lak agricultural products to overcome the strictest technical barriers. However, the biggest challenge currently is the European Union's anti-deforestation regulations (EUDR).

To solve this problem, he and his colleagues developed the EUDR software solution, establishing a standard EUDR data collection process, including: land legal records, GPS polygon positioning, digitized farming logs, and a traceability system down to each individual production household; building a mechanism for assessing "insignificant" risks and coordinating with local authorities to verify land use rights, and deploying an early warning tool for deforestation risks.

Thanks to this solution, major bottlenecks in Central Highlands agricultural products such as lack of data, lack of traceability, and lack of transparency are thoroughly addressed. “We are not only digitizing for internal management, but also striving to support farmers, especially ethnic minorities, in completing land records and cleaning up raw material area data. When data is ‘accurate, complete, clean, and vibrant,’ bottlenecks related to lack of transparency will be thoroughly resolved, helping to reduce the risk of returned goods and enhance the international competitiveness of Dak Lak coffee,” Mr. Huy shared.
