Police said they suspected it was a terrorist attack. The Israeli news site Ynet named the accused attacker as Joud Rabia from Nahaf, an Israeli town with a large Arab minority.

No group has claimed responsibility, although the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group in a post on its Telegram page described the attack as a "heroic operation".

Israeli doctors told Reuters that one of the two victims was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital, while the attacker died at the shopping mall in Karmiel, northern Israel.

Earlier in the day, doctors said they treated two men in their 20s, one in a very serious condition and the other fully conscious.

Video shared on social media shows two men lying motionless on the floor of the mall as people attempt to give them medical attention. The video shows at least one of the men being treated wearing a green uniform.

A third man, not in uniform, lay motionless a short distance away.

In January, a Palestinian car attack in central Israel killed one woman and injured 12 others.
