The Dak Lak Elephant Conservation, Animal Rescue and Forest Management Center (Buon Don commune, Dak Lak province) is currently caring for and rescuing nine rare domesticated elephants.
When we arrived, veterinarians and elephant handlers were trying to treat signs of temporal gland obstruction in several elephants – a common occurrence in male elephants during mating season.
According to veterinarians, if the discharge doesn't drain completely, it can cause swelling and inflammation, leading to abscess formation. Therefore, veterinarians and elephant handlers used veterinary medicine combined with forest herbs to treat the condition.
Dr. Cao Xuan Ninh (a veterinarian from the Elephant Care Team) prepares herbal remedies from natural ingredients and medicines to support treatment, reduce inflammation, and boost the elephants' immune system.
Veterinarians inject medication directly into the abscess and clean the wound with a medicinal decoction made from natural herbs.
At the center, Jun the elephant (far left) has her wound cleaned, disinfected, and soaked in medication daily to aid in her recovery after leg surgery. She was rescued in 2015 after stepping in an animal trap, sustaining serious injuries.
After a period of care and treatment, some elephants are released back into a semi-wild area spanning over 10,000 hectares to roam freely and rejoin nature.
Elementary school students from Lien Chieu District, Da Nang (formerly) presented flowers and congratulated Miss International 2024 Huynh Thi Thanh Thuy.
