The development of modern society is posing many challenges for school-age children. Therefore, in addition to cultural education, children need to be equipped with skills to protect themselves from unsafe risks, such as: traffic accidents, school violence, drowning...

Teaching life skills through extracurricular activities is the way to help students equip themselves with the necessary knowledge to protect themselves.
This is also one of the activities regularly organized by schools in Yen Bai ward in recent times and received positive response from parents and students.
Accordingly, each school will choose an educational focus appropriate to its characteristics and social context, but all have the common goal of equipping students with necessary and useful skills.

At Quang Trung Secondary School, traffic safety is a top priority, so the school coordinated with Yen Bai Ward Police to organize an extracurricular activity called "Ensuring traffic safety".
With a new form of organization, not only stopping at propagating the law, but also providing practice exercises on simulated traffic situations right in the school yard, helping students directly experience and practice skills to handle dangerous situations safely and confidently. They also practice distinguishing signs, how to behave when participating in traffic, especially the skills of wearing helmets properly and handling unexpected dangerous situations.
Propagating the law through extracurricular activities helps students not only remember the law faster but also form awareness and habits of participating in safe traffic, helping them feel confident when facing unexpected situations on the road.
Realizing the importance of fire and explosion prevention, Nguyen Hue High School coordinated with the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department ( Lao Cai Provincial Police) to organize an extracurricular program to disseminate knowledge and instruct essential skills on fire prevention, fire fighting, rescue with specific and practical content.

During the extracurricular activities, students directly practiced using fire extinguishers, escape skills, how to move safely in smoky and fire environments, how to protect the respiratory tract, and basic first aid for people with burns or smoke inhalation.
Lieutenant Colonel Hoang Quoc Thinh - Deputy Head of the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department said: "The program aims to provide teachers and students with knowledge and skills to prevent and protect themselves and to propagate to the community to do a good job of fire prevention and fighting."
At the Provincial Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities - a unique environment with many students coming from different regions and localities, preventing and combating school violence becomes a top priority.
The extracurricular session on school violence through a skit staged and performed by the students themselves helped students in the whole school identify forms of violence, including mental violence and cyber violence, learn how to control emotions through situational exercises, practice negotiation and reconciliation skills instead of using force.

In particular, children are instructed in skills to seek help from teachers, parents, and relatives when they or their friends are threatened.
Openness and trust in extracurricular discussions create a safe space, building a culture of respect and sharing within the boarding community.
Student Ho Thi Chia, class 12C2 shared: The extracurricular session was very meaningful and useful. Through skits and situational activities, I understood more clearly about forms of violence and knew how to protect myself.
Life skills education is not a choice but an urgent requirement of the times. By participating in experiences, students not only acquire knowledge but also develop core competencies to adapt and apply to real life; at the same time, it helps students connect and interact with friends and teachers, creating a positive, friendly and safe learning environment.
