Extending Tet holidays for students in Ho Chi Minh City: Why is the proposal too late?

The Ho Chi Minh City Departmentof Education and Training has just submitted a proposal to increase the number of days off for the 2025 Lunar New Year for students, forcing parents to change their plans.

The Tet holiday schedule specified in the school year schedule is 9 days, while in previous years, students had 14-16 days off.

Many readers have commented on this latest proposal of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.

To let students have more Tet holiday

Reader Thanh Hai wrote: "Support this proposal. Students who study for a long time need time to rest, play and visit. That is an opportunity for them to practice life skills to be more active."

According to reader Khang, extending the Tet holiday for students can also stimulate tourism . "In fact, all family travel plans depend entirely on the children's Tet holiday schedule," this reader said.

Reader Tran Hoa said that Ho Chi Minh City has many migrant workers. Sometimes families only have the chance to visit their hometowns once a year. "Students who go to school on the 5th day of Tet cannot make it in time. Ho Chi Minh City should have a 14-16 day break like every year," the reader suggested.

Meanwhile, reader Nguyen Duc Thanh - a teacher in Ho Chi Minh City - realized that if the holidays are too short, the families of the children will not be able to return to their hometowns, especially those in the Central and Northern regions.

This reader expressed: "In my opinion, we should give the children at least 2 weeks off. If possible, 3 weeks so that they can travel to save money and effort, and strengthen family ties."

'If you want to calculate, calculate early'

However, many readers do not agree with the proposal to change the Tet holiday schedule of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training at such a late date.

Reader with email hop.****@gmail.com thinks that the above proposal is only suitable for some students whose parents live far away and come to Ho Chi Minh City to work. For students whose families live in Ho Chi Minh City, 9 days off is also reasonable.

Some readers are concerned about the difference in Tet holiday schedules between parents and students. Reader Quynh said: "The long holiday is too hard for families who cannot return to their hometowns, do not have grandparents, and parents still have to go to work."

Reader Thanh Thuy asked: "Parents go to work on the 6th, who will take care of their children?". "Parents go to work but their children are still on Tet holiday, who will take care of them? Just like every year before is fine" - reader Hoan commented.

Similarly, reader Nguyen Nguyen also said: "All parents have to go to work, leaving their children at home will be very inconvenient. It is still better for children to go to school, why do they want to stay home for such a long time, the reason to go back to the countryside is not convincing."

Meanwhile, reader Nguyen said: "If there is any proposal, it must be done early and before selling train and bus tickets. Because students are on Tet holiday, parents also have more things to calculate."

A reader agreed, saying that any changes to the Tet holiday schedule should be made soon. Currently, many people living far away have mostly bought tickets to return to their hometowns and return to Ho Chi Minh City.

"Now, let's give the kids more Tet holiday. If the parents go home and work, who will take care of the kids if they don't go to school? This decision should have been made much earlier," this reader wrote.

Reader Thao commented: "If you want to calculate, calculate it early, and the regulations on holidays should also be agreed upon early to support the people. At this time, people have already booked round-trip bus and plane tickets for Tet. If we add more days off, we will have to change the tickets, it's so confusing!"

Reader Quang Phu raised the question: "I remember last year, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City also proposed fewer days off than other localities (mostly 2 weeks), then parents had their opinions, the department changed, proposed again and Ho Chi Minh City agreed to give more days off. This year, the old scene is repeated: Ho Chi Minh City gives students only 9 days off while other localities give 2 weeks off.

For me, the issue is not whether the vacation is long or short, but that there must be a fixed schedule early and fixed for parents to take care of in advance. This needs to be done annually, not proposed and changed every year.

If the department proposes a shorter stay, then keep the decision as it is, parents buying tickets to travel will not change anything. But parents have already bought tickets, arranged their Tet holiday plans, and then suddenly had to change them, which puts parents in a completely passive position. This is a way of doing things that should not be repeated again."
