From traditional apple orchard to effective apple trellis model
Nam Do Son Ward currently has more than 120 hectares of apple trees - a typical fruit tree that has been associated with local people for many years. In recent years, thanks to the companionship, guidance and support from professional agencies, many households have boldly innovated production methods, switching from traditional apple growing to the model of climbing apples, bringing outstanding economic efficiency.
A typical example is Ms. Nguyen Thi Van (born in 1979) with more than 5,000 m2 of climbing apples in Dong Tien 1 Residential Group. Ms. Van said that her family has been growing apples since 2005 in the traditional way. But by 2023, thanks to the Agricultural Extension Center's guidance on converting the model to growing climbing apples, her family's apple garden has significantly increased in productivity and fruit quality.

“Growing apple trees on trellises makes it easier for me to care for them and reduces damage by up to 70% during storms. During Typhoon Yagi , the apple orchard only had damaged leaves, not broken stems, so the crop was still harvested. Currently, after deducting expenses, my apple orchard makes a profit of about 300 million VND each year,” Ms. Van shared.
Not only that, Ms. Van was also enthusiastically guided by the Agricultural Extension Center and the Farmers' Association, invited to participate in field workshops, trained in pruning techniques, trellis making and apple tree care, helping her become more and more proficient in production. Ms. Van shared: "Since applying the correct techniques, my apple garden has a much higher yield, the fruit is more even and beautiful." Along with that, after the storm, authorities at all levels from Do Son district (old) to Bang La ward and the Farmers' Association directly visited the garden, encouraged, gave gifts and support, helping farmers to quickly restore production.
Also in Nam Do Son ward, Mr. Bui Duy Dung (owner of Dung Huyen apple garden) - is one of the pioneering households to switch to growing climbing apples since 2021. With more than 7,000 m2 of garden, he earns about 400 million VND each year after deducting expenses. "Growing apples on trellises gives much higher productivity, beautiful fruit, good quality and also attracts tourists to visit, experience and enjoy Bang La apples," said Mr. Dung.
Mr. Dung added that the ward People's Committee and specialized agencies regularly come to survey and guide care according to each growth stage, helping the apple trees develop stably. "Thanks to technical support, productivity and quality have both increased. I believe that this model will continue to develop, helping people to become rich sustainably," Mr. Dung affirmed.
Developing apple trees associated with tourism
According to Mr. Hoang Gia Dong - Chairman of Nam Do Son Ward People's Committee, apple is a crop that brings high economic value to many households in the area, with total revenue reaching 50 - 60 billion VND/year. "Bang La apple is a special agricultural product, helping people increase their income. We are aiming to develop this crop into a high-tech agricultural product associated with experiential tourism in climbing apple gardens", Mr. Dong said.

The local government also encourages the development of apple-based products such as apple blossom honey, apple wine, etc. to diversify products and increase economic value. It can be said that the Bang La apple tree is becoming a symbol of sustainable economic development, along with an effective social security policy, contributing to building a Nam Do Son that is not only economically rich but also socially stable.
“Currently, there are no poor households in the ward and only more than 20 near-poor households. In the coming time, the local government will continue to implement support policies according to regulations, and at the same time, coordinate with social organizations to help those in difficult circumstances, helping them escape poverty sustainably," Mr. Dong emphasized.
This affirmation shows the synchronization in economic development and ensuring people's lives. To realize this goal, the local government has been implementing many specific solutions. Along with encouraging people to develop production, Nam Do Son ward continues to implement technical training programs, support preferential loans as well as implement winter crop production... helping farmers continuously increase their income.
In the past 10 months, the socio-economic situation in Nam Do Son ward has continued to maintain stability and development; the main targets have all reached and exceeded the planned progress, contributing to maintaining the overall growth momentum. In the last months of the year, Nam Do Son ward will focus on effectively implementing the assigned tasks. This locality will continue to promote winter crop production, organize training and technical propaganda for key crops, including Bang La apple trees.
In addition to production development, the ward also focuses on social security work, regularly reviewing and updating the list of poor and near-poor households according to new criteria, ensuring publicity, transparency and targeting the right subjects. Support policies on health insurance, education, preferential loans and livelihood support continue to be implemented promptly, contributing to improving people's lives and developing the local economy sustainably.
