Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Van Phong, along with other leaders from the Central Government and Hanoi City, surveyed the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Heritage Site.

The conference was attended and chaired by the Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee and Head of the Steering Committee, Nguyen Van Phong; also present were the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the UNESCO Committee in Vietnam, Ngo Le Van; the Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Hoang Dao Cuong; the Vice Chairman of the Hanoi City People's Committee, Vu Thu Ha; and leaders of various departments and agencies of the city.

Reporting at the conference, Nguyen Thanh Quang, Director of the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center, stated that in 2025, the Center had implemented and completed 15 out of 16 tasks assigned by the Steering Committee. Among these, the task of restoring the Kinh Thien Palace was identified as a key priority, of particular importance and urgency to the conservation and promotion of heritage values.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang, the Center has closely coordinated with the Institute of Archaeology to conduct exploratory excavations in the Kinh Thien Main Hall area, thereby achieving many important scientific results, contributing to clarifying the scale, layout, and foundation of the structure, and supplementing the scientific basis for research and orientation of the reconstruction of the Kinh Thien Main Hall.

Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee Nguyen Van Phong held discussions with delegates participating in the survey team.

Specifically, in 2025, archaeological excavations will be carried out in the Kính Thiên Palace foundation area, covering a total area of 580m², located beneath the Artillery building (CT04). This structure has been dismantled according to proper and controlled procedures, ensuring compliance with the Venice Charter of 1964 and the Vietnamese Law on Cultural Heritage of 2024, while also fully complying with reporting requirements to UNESCO.

Preliminary results indicate that the stratigraphic layers in the excavated area are approximately 6 meters thick, comprising 6 continuous cultural layers, spanning from the Pre-Thang Long period (7th-10th centuries) to the modern era (19th-20th centuries). Notably, the Le Dynasty cultural layer is the thickest, nearly 3 meters, encompassing two successive periods: the Early Le Dynasty and the Later Le Dynasty.

The survey team inspects archaeological sites in the Kính Thiên Palace area (Thăng Long Imperial Citadel Heritage Site).

Associated with the stratigraphic layers is a rich system of architectural remains from many historical periods. Archaeologists have discovered red bricks from the Tran Dynasty (13th - 14th centuries), gray bricks from the early Le Dynasty (15th - 16th centuries), the stone paving of the Royal Road, and 14 architectural foundations of the Kinh Thien Main Palace from the Le Trung Hung period (17th - 18th centuries).

The Director of the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center emphasized that these findings are highly authentic and provide an important scientific basis for the research and reconstruction strategy of the Kinh Thien Main Palace and the central space of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel during the Le Dynasty; at the same time, they meet the recommendations of UNESCO/ICOMOS and the requirements of the Law on Cultural Heritage, contributing to clarifying the basic attributes that constitute the outstanding universal value of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel - Hanoi World Heritage Site.

The conference reviewed and evaluated the results of tasks in 2025 and outlined key tasks for 2026.

Speaking at the conference, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee Nguyen Van Phong acknowledged and highly appreciated the efforts of the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center and the Institute of Archaeology in implementing tasks, especially the new archaeological excavation results at the Kinh Thien Palace area.

Based on the assessment of results in 2025, the Steering Committee discussed and agreed on key tasks for the coming period, focusing on resolving difficulties and bottlenecks, ensuring the progress and quality of conservation, restoration, and promotion of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Heritage Site, meeting the requirements of sustainable development and the set goals and plans.
