On the morning of June 4, at the People's Committee of Gia Van commune (Gia Vien district), Ninh Binh Tourism Association coordinated with Vietnam Tourism Association to organize a training course on reducing plastic waste in the tourism sector.
Attending the event were leaders of the Department of Tourism, Vietnam Tourism Association, Ninh Binh Tourism Association, experts, representatives of some organizations of Gia Van commune, management staff, and boatmen in Van Long Eco-tourism Area.
Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve is the last intact inland wetland in the Red River Delta and is the 9th Ramsar site of Vietnam. Van Long possesses a rare type of wetland ecosystem and underground hydrology in the Indochina region, including rivers, shallow lakes and rich wetland vegetation, with specific ecological characteristics creating a unique natural landscape. Therefore, protecting the environmental landscape and biodiversity of Van Long plays an important role in tourism development, socio-economic development, job creation and increasing income for the people.
Recognizing that, in recent years, the local government and people have paid great attention to implementing environmental protection measures and preserving the wild beauty of Van Long. People who participate in ferrying tourists have become tour guides and propagandists in environmental protection work.
However, tourism activities also contribute to increasing plastic waste, affecting the environment of Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve.
At the training session, delegates shared good practices and initiatives applied in the process of developing plastic waste-free tourism in Gia Vien. They emphasized the role of mass organizations such as the Youth Union, Farmers' Association, Women's Association and workers directly involved in tourism activities, who will be pioneers in reducing plastic waste in each house, each village, each road and each tourist route in the conservation area.
Vietnam Tourism Association and Provincial Tourism Association have introduced the set of criteria for recognizing plastic waste-free tourism enterprises applied at Van Long Eco-tourism Area. At the same time, they encourage tourist areas, spots, restaurants, and hotels to develop specific action plans to reduce plastic waste; soon use applications (apps) to manage plastic waste in the tourism industry. Thereby contributing to environmental protection and developing green and sustainable tourism.
