The US Navy ships USS Tripoli and USS Robert Smalls docked in Da Nang.

The amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli and the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls, along with more than 2,300 American officers and sailors, docked at Tien Sa port, beginning a friendly visit to Da Nang City on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Vietnam-US relations.

On the evening of December 8th, the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7) and the guided missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls (CG 62), along with more than 2,300 US officers, sailors, and Marines, docked at Tien Sa Port, beginning a friendly visit to Da Nang City.

The delegation was led by Rear Admiral Thomas Shultz, Commander of the U.S. 7th Expeditionary Strike Group.

The welcoming ceremony for the delegation was held solemnly at Tien Sa Port. The event took place on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States, marking a new step forward in defense cooperation, people-to-people exchanges, and strengthening strategic trust between Vietnam and the US.

Speaking at the welcoming ceremony, Rear Admiral Thomas Shultz expressed his emotion at the warm welcome from the Vietnamese side.

"This visit highlights the growing relationship between the two nations and their militaries, helping to build understanding and trust, advance shared goals of peace, prosperity and economic security, and contribute to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region," Rear Admiral Thomas Shultz emphasized.

US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E. Knapper also assessed the visit as a vivid testament to the increasingly strong partnership between the two countries.

Marc E. Knapper stated that bilateral security cooperation, including humanitarian assistance and disaster response training, is helping to strengthen Vietnam's response capabilities in disaster-prone areas and deepen relations between the people of the two countries.

During their stay in Da Nang City , the commanding officers of the two ships will pay courtesy calls to the leaders of the Da Nang City People's Committee, Military Region 5, and Naval Region 3; exchange expertise and participate in sports activities with Vietnamese Navy officers; visit and interact with children at the Village of Hope and students at the University of Foreign Languages ​​- Da Nang University. They will also explore local culture and tourism.

USS Tripoli is a new-generation America-class amphibious assault ship of the US Navy. The ship is 257.3 meters long, 32.3 meters wide, has a displacement of nearly 45,000 tons, and a maximum speed of 25 knots. It is capable of carrying 10-20 F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters, MV-22 Osprey helicopters, and many other modern weapons systems such as Rolling Airframe missile launchers, Evolved Sea Sparrow missile launchers, cannons, and numerous machine guns.

The USS Robert Smalls is a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser. Commissioned in 1989, it was initially named USS Chancellorsville. In March 2023, it was renamed Robert Smalls. The ship is equipped with cruise missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, automatic cannons, anti-submarine weapons, and two helicopters…

Previously, in 2023, the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, along with two escort cruisers, USS Antietam (CG 54) and USS Robert Smalls (CG 62), also docked at Tien Sa port, visiting Da Nang city.
