On the evening of December 8, the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7) and the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls (CG 62) with more than 2,300 US officers, sailors, and marines docked at Tien Sa port, beginning a friendship visit to Da Nang city.
The delegation was led by Rear Admiral Thomas Shultz, Commander of the US Expeditionary Strike Group 7.

The welcoming ceremony was held solemnly at Tien Sa port. The event took place on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam - US diplomatic relations, marking a new step forward in defense cooperation, people-to-people exchange and strengthening of Vietnam - US strategic trust.

Speaking at the welcoming ceremony, Rear Admiral Thomas Shultz expressed his emotion at the warm welcome from the Vietnamese side.
"This visit highlights the growing relationship between the two countries and the two militaries, helping to build understanding and trust, promoting common goals of peace, prosperity and economic security, contributing to maintaining a free and open Indo- Pacific region," Rear Admiral Thomas Shultz emphasized.

US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E.Knapper also assessed the visit as a vivid demonstration of the increasingly good partnership between the two countries.
Mr. Marc E.Knapper said that bilateral security cooperation, including humanitarian assistance and disaster response training, is helping to strengthen Vietnam's response capacity in disaster-prone areas and deepen the relationship between the two peoples.
During their stay in Da Nang City , the commanding officers of the two ships will pay courtesy visits to the leaders of the Da Nang City People's Committee, Military Region 5 and Naval Region 3; exchange expertise and participate in sports activities with officers and staff of the Vietnam Navy; visit and interact with children of the Hope Village and students of the University of Foreign Languages - Da Nang University. At the same time, they will visit local culture and tourism sites.
