Are Russian nuclear missiles lying at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean?

GD&TĐ - Russia may be carrying out a secret project to place missiles carrying nuclear warheads on the seabed in the Arctic.

This information was reported by the Tagesschau newspaper, citing data from several intelligence agencies of NATO countries.

This is a secret program codenamed "Skif." According to this, Russia may be preparing to deploy missile systems in its own Arctic waters.

According to Western intelligence, the missiles can be placed in various types of naval mines or specially designed containers on the seabed, sometimes at depths of several hundred meters.

It is believed that such systems would be able to remain submerged underwater for extended periods, and launch would be carried out remotely after receiving the appropriate command.

According to NATO, to deploy the aforementioned infrastructure, Russia could use the military transport ship Zvezdochka, based in Severodvinsk, which is designed to transport large equipment by sea.

This project may also involve the special submarine named Sarov, which was previously used to test secret maritime systems.

Russia will not need strategic submarines to launch nuclear missiles from the seabed.

The concept of secretly deploying nuclear weapons on the seabed is not new, as such a scenario was seriously considered during the Cold War.

It was because of this risk that the Treaty on the Prohibition of the Placement of Nuclear Weapons and Other Means of Mass Destruction on the Seabed and Oceans came into effect in 1971, signed by dozens of countries, including the Soviet Union and the United States.

This document prohibits placing nuclear weapons on the seabed outside the territorial waters of nations. The logic here is flawed: If nuclear weapons are hidden in the ocean, they will be very difficult to find, track, and neutralize.

If information about the Skif project is confirmed, it could indicate that Russia is seeking new ways to circumvent international restrictions and create an additional element of covert nuclear deterrence.
