(Photo: Hoang Minh/VNA) On April 13, people in the Kingdom of Cambodia officially entered the traditional Tet (New Year) 2024 holiday for 4 days (until April 16), one day longer than usual. According to VNA correspondents in Phnom Penh, the central roads of the capital Phnom Penh are more open than usual, as the majority of local people and migrant workers have traveled back to their hometowns to reunite with their families and participate in traditional Tet activities. However, on the first day of the Choul Chnam Thmey 2024 festival season, some traditional markets in Phnom Penh still operate with goods mainly being Tet necessities and New Year's Eve offerings such as sacred rice (bai sey), areca nuts, incense, lamps, candles, cakes, fruits of all kinds... According to the Mahasangkran calendar, the New Year's Eve moment to welcome the new year 2024 of the Cambodian people takes place at 10:17 p.m. on the first day of the festival, called Choul Chnam Thmey or Mahasangkran. From early morning, Cambodian people bring food to the pagoda to offer to monks, perform rituals of offering alms bowls, praying for the dead, building sand mountains, listening to Dharma talks... These tasks usually end in the morning, so that monks can chant sutras, preach, conduct other traditional rituals and eat food no later than noon according to the tradition of primitive Buddhism. In some localities, the temple grounds are also the venue for the Choul Chnam Thmey festival, with the Sangkran event usually starting in the afternoon, along with traditional and modern music and dance programs, traditional dances and vibrant folk games, imbued with the cultural identity of the people of the Pagoda.
In the capital city of Phnom Penh, the Sangkran event and entertainment activities are held at four main locations, including Wat Phnom, Independence Park, Botum Vatey Pagoda Park and the riverside area in front of Ounalom Pagoda, near the Royal Palace of Cambodia. On the occasion of the traditional New Year 2024, Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni sent a congratulatory message to the Cambodian people, highlighting the great significance of the festival in preserving solidarity and fine traditional customs of the nation as well as honoring Khmer culture./.
