Upon completion, the airport will expand its capacity to 18-20 million passengers per year.

The project was approved for investment on June 19, 2025, and is invested by Sun Airport Joint Stock Company, Sun Group, under the business investment model.

The bustling work atmosphere on the construction site reflects the determination of the construction units to bring the project to completion on schedule.

According to the approved plan, the airport will meet the 4E classification as stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), allowing it to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747, 787, or Airbus A350, increasing the airport's operating capacity to 20 million passengers per year by 2027. In Phase II, the project will be expanded to 50 million passengers per year.

The runway infrastructure includes expanding the existing Runway 1 and constructing a new Runway 2, measuring 3,500 m and 3,300 m respectively, while the apron system will be expanded to over 120 parking positions. The airport's Terminal 2 passenger terminal was designed by CPG Consultants (Singapore) and Artelia Airport (France), inspired by the image of the fiery phoenix, symbolizing strength and rebirth.

The VIP terminal, spanning 6,000 square meters, is inspired by the image of a sea eagle, a symbol of freedom, grace, and harmony with nature. The facility is equipped with modern amenities, capable of accommodating private jets carrying up to 300 people. The VIP terminal will be the venue for welcoming heads of state during APEC 2027 and other important events in Phu Quoc in the future.

Phu Quoc International Airport will be operated by Changi Airport Group, the same operator as Changi Airport in Singapore. It will incorporate a range of world- leading aviation technologies, including a master-operated system, a biometric system for seamless, contactless journeys, a modern ICS baggage handling system, advanced German screening systems, and automated parking, underground refueling, and jet bridge technologies, aiming for a leading smart airport in the region, reducing check-in time to just 15-20 seconds per person.

According to reporters' observations, in Phase I to serve APEC 2027, starting in July 2025, construction has been intensified on projects including the construction of the second runway, VIP terminal, and Terminal 2, with 700 large piles being driven each month… and construction has now reached the 4th floor. The VIP terminal has achieved 100% of its rough and steel structure, 10% of its MEP and finishing work; the second runway has reached 30% of its construction volume, aiming for complete completion by March 2027, after only 18 months of construction.

According to representatives of the construction contractors, the expanded runway is expected to be completed on June 30, 2026; the VIP terminal on September 30, 2026; and Terminal T2 (Phase I) on December 30, 2026.
