In response to criticism of recent errors in the organization of the 33rd SEA Games, including allegations of owing money to partners and athletes in the "Kamkon Khao" program, Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee - Director of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) said that Thailand's budget for the Games is quite limited.
Specifically, the total budget approved by the Government is 2.055 billion baht (about 62.2 million USD, 1.654 trillion VND). This figure is much lower than the 3 billion baht (about 93 million USD) that Cambodia spent on the 32nd SEA Games.
Specifically, the central budget for main activities is 456 million baht; 421 million baht to support athletes' preparation, 320 million baht to invest in improving competition venue facilities and 1 billion baht to build a media center.
In the first expenditure, 166 million baht is for the opening and closing ceremonies and 260 million baht, accounting for 56.95%, is for logistics costs and serving sports delegations.
Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee added that the need to cut costs has led to many constraints, and this is not a problem for the SEA Games, but for the sports industry, which has been hit by annual budget cuts. He also revealed that a proposal to increase the amount of over 200 million baht to subsidize athletes was rejected amid the natural disasters in southern Thailand. In addition, changes in government and policies have also affected the disbursement.
