Báo Nhân dânBáo Nhân dân05/09/2024

Preparing to turn off the GSM (2G) mobile information system in Thai Nguyen province in the near future, which means that "brick" phones will no longer be usable. Recently, the Department of Information and Communications of Thai Nguyen and telecommunications enterprises in the area have actively supported people to switch to 2G phones.

By the end of 2023, in Thai Nguyen province, there were more than 76 thousand subscribers using Viettel's 2G Only network, accounting for 8% of the total subscribers of this network, in which 2G users were mainly in remote areas, ethnic minorities, and the elderly.

Recently, the Department of Information and Communications of Thai Nguyen, Viettel Thai Nguyen have stepped up propaganda and mobilization; implemented support for telephones from the Public Telecommunications Fund ( Ministry of Information and Communications ), Viettel Thai Nguyen to villages, hamlets, and residential groups to support people in switching phones, reducing the price of the phone by 50% to 195 thousand VND/4G-connected phone; promotions so the number of 2G phones using Viettel network in the area has decreased rapidly, the reduction rate ranked 3rd in the country.

Therefore, by the end of August 2024, only 2.6% of Viettel subscribers in the province will use 2G phones, equivalent to more than 25,500 phones. Viettel Thai Nguyen requests that all levels and functional agencies, especially organizations, heads of villages, hamlets, and communes, continue to propagate to members and people and Viettel Thai Nguyen create the most favorable conditions to support users to switch phones in the coming time.

Along with supporting the conversion of devices, Viettel Thai Nguyen has improved the operational quality of more than 200 4G and 5G mobile broadcasting stations; at the same time, it has upgraded nearly 50 stations in areas with high traffic to satisfy people's needs.

From the end of July to the end of August 2024, Viettel Thai Nguyen has tested blocking 2G waves in most districts and cities in the area, but it has not affected communications and people's lives. It is expected that by September 15, subscribers using Viettel's 2G network in Thai Nguyen province will be blocked according to the widely announced roadmap.

Similar to Viettel, recently VNPT Thai Nguyen also implemented support for people to switch to 2G devices, so up to now, the whole Thai Nguyen province only has about 50 thousand subscribers using 2G devices.

Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Thai Nguyen Do Xuan Hoa requested that all levels, organizations and unions, especially in remote villages and ethnic minority areas, actively promote the State's telephone support policy to support the conversion of 2G phones in the coming time so that when 2G is turned off, people will still have phones to use for their daily life.

In the province, there are only 7 hamlets that are "troughs" when 2G signal is turned off. The Department of Information and Communications of Thai Nguyen has proposed that the Ministry of Information and Communications add investment in building BTS stations in these places to the areas supported by public telecommunications services to serve the people, mainly ethnic minorities.

The Department of Information and Communications affirmed that the construction of mobile broadcasting stations has absolutely no impact on people's health.
