Driving force from industry and exports.
In recent years, Thai Nguyen has become one of the country's major industrial production centers, especially in the fields of electronics, high technology, and products such as steel, minerals, and textiles. The presence of multinational corporations has led to a huge demand for transportation, warehousing, and logistics services.
In the first quarter of 2026 alone, the total import and export turnover in the province reached approximately 15.9 billion USD, with a trade surplus of 3.6 billion USD, making Thai Nguyen the leading locality in the country in terms of trade surplus.
Notably, the electronics and mobile phone sector accounts for over 95% of export value. This demonstrates the scale and significant dependence of the local economy on global supply chains.
According to the plan approved by the Prime Minister , Thai Nguyen is located in the development zone of the Northern Midlands and Mountains region, serving as an industrial, urban, and service center of the region, with industry playing a key role as the driving force for growth.
The province focuses on developing high-level electronics, semiconductor, mechanical engineering, electrical equipment, high-tech, and digital industries, which have a ripple effect and lead the industrial development of the entire region.

Transportation and logistics infrastructure in Thai Nguyen province is being gradually invested in a comprehensive and modern manner to meet the requirements of integration and supply chain development.
This strong growth necessitates the development of a modern logistics system to reduce transportation costs and enhance competitiveness. With its advantageous geographical location approximately 75-80km from Hanoi, close to Noi Bai International Airport, and with convenient inland waterway connections to Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, and Hanoi, Thai Nguyen possesses many favorable conditions for developing inter-regional logistics.
In recent years, the road transport system in the province has been significantly improved with the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen expressway (CT.07), key national highways such as National Highway 3, National Highway 1B, National Highway 37, the Phu Tho - Thai Nguyen - Bac Ninh regional link, Ring Road V, and many new routes under investment such as the Lang Son - Thai Nguyen - Tuyen Quang expressway, the Cao Bang - Thai Nguyen route, etc.
Notably, the plan to expand the CT.07 expressway to 6 lanes is being implemented to meet the increasing transportation demand.
In addition, the Tien Phong Inland Container Depot (ICD) project in Pho Yen ward is planned on a scale of over 14 hectares, expected to become a modern logistics center, playing a role in transshipment of goods for the entire province and region.
Diversifying transportation modes is one of the key factors in developing logistics services, based on combining different modes of transport and optimizing multimodal transport to save time and costs.
One of Thai Nguyen's key priorities is developing a logistics system that seamlessly connects different modes of transport. Accordingly, the province focuses on forming an integrated network encompassing road, rail, inland waterway, and air transport.
In the road transport sector, expressways and national highways play a key role in connecting industrial zones with logistics centers and seaports. Simultaneously, the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Quan Trieu railway line is identified as a crucial transport corridor that needs upgrading to increase freight transport capacity, especially container transport.

The Da Phuc port cluster in Trung Thanh ward is planned to be developed into an inland waterway port, playing a connecting role in Thai Nguyen's logistics chain in the future.
For inland waterways, the efficient exploitation of routes on the Cau and Cong rivers, coupled with the development of ports and wharves, will contribute to reducing the burden on road transport and lowering logistics costs. Inland ports such as Tien Phong ICD and the Da Phuc port area will play a central role in connecting and transshipping goods between different modes of transport.
The connection to Noi Bai International Airport, located only about 50km away, opens up opportunities for the development of air logistics, especially for high-value goods requiring fast transit times such as electronics and components.
The close integration of different modes of transportation helps improve infrastructure utilization efficiency and create a flexible supply chain, reducing costs and increasing competitiveness for businesses.
Alongside infrastructure investment, Thai Nguyen is accelerating the application of technology in the logistics sector. Solutions such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), warehouse automation, transport management systems (TMS), warehouse management systems (WMS), non-stop toll collection applications, digitalization in state management, business management, and public services are being gradually implemented.
Digital transformation helps optimize operational processes, reduce goods circulation time, and enhance transparency, traceability, and supply chain connectivity. This is identified as an essential direction for the province's logistics industry to catch up with the development trends of the country and the world...
Improve infrastructure and enhance connectivity.

With its advantageous location as a gateway to the Northern Midlands and mountainous region, coupled with a strong industrial base, Thai Nguyen is gradually asserting its role as an important connecting point in the national and regional supply chain.
According to assessments by research agencies, Thai Nguyen has great potential to become a logistics center for the Northern Midlands and mountainous region thanks to its favorable geographical location, diverse transportation infrastructure, large volume of goods, high import and export turnover, and abundant human resources. However, to realize this goal, the locality still faces many challenges.
Firstly, there are limitations in infrastructure, particularly the lack of large-scale logistics centers and modern warehousing systems. Thai Nguyen's distribution and logistics service centers are still in their early stages of development and do not fully meet practical needs. The volume of goods transported currently relies mainly on road transport, while rail and inland waterways have not been effectively utilized.
Furthermore, there is a shortage of high-quality logistics human resources; local logistics businesses are mostly small-scale and lack the capacity to participate deeply in the supply chain. In addition, the specific mechanisms and policies for logistics development are not yet fully developed; investment resources are limited while material and labor costs are rising, putting significant pressure on the progress of infrastructure projects.
In order to effectively exploit its potential, Thai Nguyen has issued a logistics development plan until 2035, with a vision to 2050, aiming to form a modern and integrated logistics system.
In the short term, the province focuses on finalizing planning, accelerating key infrastructure projects such as expanding expressways, completing connecting and inter-regional transportation routes, building the Tien Phong ICD dry port, and developing warehouses and distribution centers. At the same time, it prioritizes human resource training and promotes digital transformation in various sectors.
In addition, the province is focusing on developing transportation infrastructure, warehousing infrastructure, industrial zones and clusters, etc., and is calling for investment in provincial-level logistics centers, distribution warehouse systems, inland ports, and logistics centers linked to industrial zones, clusters, and concentrated commodity production areas of the province.

Develop logistics services linked to key economic corridors along the Cao Bang - Thai Nguyen - Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh axis and the Lang Son - Bac Ninh - Hanoi corridor, especially focusing on routes connecting Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Bac Ninh, Phu Tho, and Tuyen Quang; while also researching regional linkages along the Tuyen Quang - Thai Nguyen - Lang Son horizontal axis.
The province is also promoting investment in the construction of logistics service centers in the Yen Binh Industrial-Urban-Service Zone; the Tay Pho Yen Industrial-Urban-Service Zone; the concentrated information industrial zone; the Bac Kan ward area on the Tuyen Quang - Thai Nguyen - Lang Son connecting route; Linh Son ward near the intersection of National Highway 1B and National Highway 17; and attracting investment in new commercial and logistics service areas in Kha Son commune, Dong Hy commune, Diem Thuy commune, Bach Quang ward, etc.
In the long term, the province's orientation is not only to build provincial-level logistics centers but also to strengthen regional linkages with Hanoi, Hai Phong, and the northeastern provinces, gradually participating more deeply in the international supply chain.
With a solid industrial foundation, favorable geographical location, and a strong commitment to reform, Thai Nguyen is facing a great opportunity to make a breakthrough in the transportation and logistics sector.
If the bottlenecks in infrastructure, human resources, and policy mechanisms are effectively addressed, especially by promoting multimodal connectivity between road, rail, waterway, and air transport, Thai Nguyen can absolutely become an important logistics center in the region, contributing to enhancing the competitiveness of the northern midland and mountainous region in the coming period.
