Thai Nguyen: Effectively implementing poverty reduction policies associated with sustainable development, mobilizing and rationally using all resources

After the merger, the poverty reduction work of Thai Nguyen province faces many difficulties and challenges. According to the review results of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, as of July 2025, the whole province has 23,061 poor households, accounting for 5.46% of the total number of households, and 15,482 near-poor households, accounting for 3.67%. Of which, poor households are ethnic minorities accounting for 83.93%, equivalent to 19,354 households. Faced with this reality, Thai Nguyen province is focusing all resources to support people, making efforts to achieve the goal of sustainable poverty reduction.

Although the number of poor and near-poor households has decreased, reaching the set target, after the merger, the province still faces many obstacles in poverty reduction work, especially in the northern communes - where people's lives are still difficult, the rate of poor and near-poor households remains high.

Ethnic minorities are supported with cows, trained, and guided in livestock raising techniques to develop family livelihoods.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam, Head of the Department of Economic Cooperation and Rural Development, affirmed: "No matter how difficult it is, Thai Nguyen is still determined to reduce poverty by synchronously implementing support programs and projects from the Central and local levels to people in difficult areas."

According to the orientation of the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction for the period 2026 - 2030, with a vision to 2035, Thai Nguyen sets the goal of comprehensive development, multidimensional poverty reduction and towards building a happy community. Each year, the province strives to reduce the multidimensional poverty rate by an average of 1 - 1.5%; in poor communes, it reduces by at least 3%/year; and the rate of poor ethnic minority households reduces by 3 - 4%/year according to the multidimensional poverty standard.

By 2035, the multidimensional poverty rate of the whole province is expected to be below 1%. These are challenging targets, requiring determination, consensus and synchronous action of the entire political system.

To realize that goal, one of the key solutions is to invest in developing socio-economic infrastructure in poor communes, serving production, improving people's lives and the ability to adapt to climate change.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen My Hai said that the synchronous development of inter-village and inter-commune rural transport systems, suitable to the characteristics of each region, ensuring effective connectivity, supporting livelihoods and economic development, will be an important lever to help communes in difficult areas develop.

At the same time, the province focuses on vocational training, building and replicating production models suitable for poor, near-poor and newly escaped-poverty households, with special attention to women and ethnic minorities. These models are linked to enterprises, cooperatives and cooperative groups, helping people improve their autonomy and promote the strengths of each region.

The effectiveness of practical support policies has been clearly demonstrated. Along with livelihood development, Thai Nguyen also focuses on supporting people to improve rural housing in a solid, safe and climate change-adaptive direction, prioritizing poor households, near-poor households, newly escaped poverty households, policy beneficiaries and households living in areas with high risk of natural disasters.

Applying science and technology to winter tea production brings economic efficiency.

In addition, the province also promotes improving the quality of public administrative services, supporting people to access and develop digital skills, and ensuring information security. At the same time, attention is paid to training and professional development for commune-level officials and civil servants, along with focusing on legal aid to ensure the poor have full rights.

To make the poverty reduction program effective, Thai Nguyen has strengthened inspection, supervision and evaluation of implementation in a public, transparent and realistic manner. The application of information technology, digital transformation and database building in management and monitoring of progress and results has been promoted, while promoting the monitoring role of the community through mobile applications.
