On the afternoon of November 12, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hai Phong received a delegation of experts from the Institute of Culture, Arts, Tourism and Sports (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) led by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Phuong, Director of the Institute, to consult on the project to build Hai Phong into a music city according to UNESCO criteria. Music producer, musician Quoc Trung and experts and researchers in the field of culture and arts also attended.

Building Hai Phong into a “City of Music” is a concrete step to realize the policy of the City Party Committee and People’s Committee in developing cultural industry, linking culture and art with education, tourism and creative economic development. This is an important preparatory step for Hai Phong to gradually join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of music.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) is an initiative launched by UNESCO in 2004 to promote sustainable urban development through creativity. To date, the network has nearly 400 member cities from 90 countries and territories, operating in 7 fields: music, cinema, literature, design, media arts, gastronomy and crafts - folk arts, including 75 creative cities in the field of music.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Phuong, the selection process takes place every two years. The dossier is submitted in March of odd-numbered years, then goes through two rounds of independent evaluation by UNESCO experts and member cities. The results are announced by the Director-General of UNESCO at the end of October.
The selection criteria focus on the city's development momentum, local creativity, cultural resources, action plans and ability to contribute to the sustainable development goals by 2030. The Associate Professor recommended that Hai Phong develop a detailed plan of activities for 4 years, gradually completing the dossier to submit to UNESCO in 2029.
As a consultant for the LiangBiang International Music Festival initiative to complete the dossier to honor Da Lat - City of Music, musician Quoc Trung shared many international experiences and at the same time suggested recommendations for Hai Phong to develop in accordance with UNESCO criteria. Experts also suggested that the city focus on organizing music festivals and music education for young people to form a "Music Gene" in the community, creating a foundation for sustainable development for the creative ecosystem.
The meeting is an important occasion for the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to receive professional opinions and complete the project content to submit to the City People's Committee for approval, contributing to making Hai Phong a center of music creativity in the region and the whole country.
