On January 19th, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the results of the national high school student excellence competition for the 2025-2026 academic year. The competition involved 6,750 candidates from 38 units (34 localities and 4 universities). According to the results announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, nearly 4,000 candidates won awards.
Based on the total number of first, second, third, and consolation prizes, Ho Chi Minh City leads this year with 288 winning contestants, followed by Ninh Binh with 238 prizes, and Phu Tho with 229 prizes. Hanoi has a total of 207 prizes.
The regulations for the gifted student selection exam issued by the Ministry of Education and Training stipulate the maximum number of candidates that can be registered for the team in each subject for each participating unit.
Accordingly, regarding the number of contestants in the national-level gifted student selection team, each participating unit can register a maximum of 10 contestants per team for each subject, except for Hanoi which can register a maximum of 20 contestants per team; for localities undergoing administrative unit restructuring at the provincial level, each subject can register a maximum of 20 to 30 contestants (depending on the scale), except for Ho Chi Minh City which can register 40 contestants per team.
For Ninh Binh (a locality formed by the merger of the three former provinces of Nam Dinh, Ha Nam, and Ninh Binh), achieving second place nationwide in the total number of national-level student excellence awards in the 2025-2026 school year is considered a growth in both quantity and quality.
In total, Ninh Binh won 238 awards. At the National Excellent Student Selection Examination for the 2025-2026 school year, the rate of high-ranking awards is 77% (238 award-winning candidates out of 310 participating candidates). Compared to the previous school year, the total number of awards increased from 227 awards (2024-2025 school year) to 238 awards (2025-2026 school year).
The number of awards Ninh Binh achieved this year is not a mechanical sum due to the administrative boundary merger. Comparing the aggregated data on the achievements of the three provinces before the merger—Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, and Ha Nam—in the 2024-2025 school year, this year's results show a strong shift towards improving quality.
That's a tenfold increase in first prizes. Last year, the three former provinces of Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, and Ha Nam only had one first prize each. This year, the Ninh Binh provincial team of outstanding students brought home 10 first prizes (4 first prizes in Physics, 2 first prizes in Geography, 2 first prizes in English, 1 first prize in Informatics, and 1 first prize in French).
In terms of the number of first prizes, Ninh Binh ranks third nationwide, after Hanoi with 23 prizes and Phu Tho with 11 prizes.
Ninh Binh also saw steady growth in second and third prizes, with the number of second prizes increasing from 54 to 63 and third prizes from 81 to 88.
The results from this year's national excellent student competition have propelled Ninh Binh into the group of leading localities in terms of outstanding educational achievements, creating a new position on the national education map.
According to representatives from the Ninh Binh Department of Education and Training, the province currently has several specialized high schools, including Le Hong Phong Specialized High School, Luong Van Tuy Specialized High School, and Bien Hoa Specialized High School. These schools have maximized their strengths, sharing experiences in exam preparation, creating unified and cohesive teams, leveraging collective strength to conquer new intellectual heights.
Sharing their thoughts after receiving the results announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, the leaders of Ninh Binh's education and training sector stated that the achievements attained in the very first year of the merger are clear evidence of the effectiveness of concentrating resources in education in general and in nurturing national-level outstanding students in particular. This represents a significant growth not only in scale but also in the internal strength of Ninh Binh's education and training sector, and is a source of great pride and motivation for the sector to continue striving for higher goals in regional and international competitions.
