Risk of widespread landslides

Reflecting to Da Nang Newspaper and Radio and Television on November 11, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga, a resident of My Hao village (Vu Gia commune) said: "My Hao village is located along the river so it has been frequently affected by landslides for many years. However, the flood in late October 2025 is considered the most serious that our people have ever witnessed. People in the village are worried and insecure as the riverbank shows signs of continuing to subside."

According to records, the Vu Gia river bank in My Hao village has many consecutive landslides with a total length of more than 800m, from the village to An Binh bridge. Many landslides are up to 300m long and 15-30m deep. Many areas of production land have collapsed into the riverbed.

Nearly 4km away, the Vu Gia river embankment along route DX3 through My Phiem village (Khuong My hamlet) has long been degraded and continues to erode seriously after heavy rains at the end of October. Hundreds of meters of embankment have collapsed, threatening the safety of route DX3 - the only road serving the people of My Phiem village.

In Quang Dai village, nearly 200m of the embankment of the Quang Hue river has collapsed, "opening the mouth of the frog", eating deep into the foot of the embankment of the residential road and the bridge abutment. The landslide directly affects the safety of 35 households in Quang Xuyen group, threatening about 6 hectares of agricultural land.

Local people and authorities are concerned that the landslides will continue and the landslide area will become larger as the weather remains complicated.

According to the report of Vu Gia Commune People's Committee, the recent historic flood caused particularly serious damage in the commune. Hundreds of livestock and poultry were swept away; many areas of rice, crops and aquatic products were flooded and damaged. Hundreds of tons of rice, household equipment and farming tools at people's milling, vermicelli, noodle and rice paper making facilities were flooded and damaged.

The floods filled about 100 hectares of agricultural land, with a layer of sand 0.5 to 1 meter thick; the canal system was damaged, blocking the flow. Many embankments along the Quang Hue and Vu Gia rivers had their piers and foundations eroded, threatening residential areas and rural traffic.

Need long-term solutions

Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Vu Gia Commune, Le Phan Minh, said that before storm No. 12 (Fengshen) and storm No. 13 (Kalmaegi), the People's Committee of the commune reported to the People's Committee of Da Nang City about the landslide situation at the embankment of Quang Hue River and the embankment of Vu Gia River, two embankment systems in the commune.

According to the leader of Vu Gia commune, after the recent historic flood, the locality recorded that old landslides continued to collapse and many new landslides appeared.

Some embankment points have collapsed piers and foundations, causing severe erosion on the embankment system of Vu Gia and Quang Hue rivers; affecting the safety of residential areas and rural traffic. The locality has surveyed and reported to the City Civil Defense Command about this situation.

On October 2, 2025, the People's Committee of Da Nang City announced a natural disaster emergency situation regarding the serious landslide situation at the Vu Gia River embankment and the Quang Hue River embankment in Vu Gia commune.

On October 28, 2025, the People's Committee of Da Nang City decided to add nearly 3 billion VND from the city's budget reserve to support the People's Committee of Vu Gia Commune to urgently overcome landslides, ensure the safety of residents and essential infrastructure.

Regarding the landslide situation along the embankment along DX3 road leading to My Phiem village, Chairman of Vu Gia Commune People's Committee Le Phan Minh said: "In the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2026 - 2030, the locality proposed to the City People's Committee to invest in the DH17 riverside road project connecting from DH16 road to the intersection of DH11 road with DT609C road, with a total investment of more than 284 billion VND".

According to Mr. Minh, if the policy is approved, the DH17 route will be deployed through Vu Gia and Dai Loc communes, connecting My Phiem village, with a length of about 7.7km. When completed, this route will contribute to significantly improving traffic conditions, socio-economic development, improving the drainage system, minimizing flooding, environmental pollution and damage caused by floods.

“We hope that in the future, the DH17 route will play the role of a flood avoidance route, reinforcing river embankments, supporting disaster prevention, rescue, and ensuring people's safety during the rainy and stormy season,” said Mr. Minh.

Mr. Nguyen Tuan, a resident of My Hao village, suggested: “During the recent heavy rains, the river water rose, causing deep flooding in the village and surrounding areas; landslides also became larger, causing huge production losses. We hope the city will soon implement solid embankment plans on the river banks to make people feel more secure.”
