The Premier League website has confirmed that only one match will be played on Boxing Day on December 26. That is the match between MU and Newcastle at Old Trafford.
This decision marks the first time in Premier League history that fans will only see one match on a special day in England, instead of all 10 matches taking place at the same time as before. Apart from the MU vs Newcastle match, 7 matches will be held on December 27 and the remaining 2 matches will be moved to December 28.
The change comes as a result of the league's broadcast schedule and television contract constraints. The Premier League is obliged to ensure 33 weekend games and five midweek games are played during the season. As December 26 this year falls on a Friday, only one match can be played without affecting the overall fixture structure.
“We understand the significance of Boxing Day to English football fans,” the Premier League said in a statement. “However, due to broadcast constraints and the coordination between different competitions, it was inevitable that the number of matches on this occasion would be reduced.”
The Premier League has pledged that from next season, when December 26 falls on a Saturday, the Boxing Day tradition will be restored with a full slate of matches on the same day.
