Additional treatment for patients with end-stage renal failure

In order to improve the quality of diagnosis, treatment and update professional knowledge in the field of Nephrology - Urology and Dialysis for medical facilities; On October 30, at General Hospital No. 2, Lao Cai Provincial Department of Health coordinated with Bach Mai Hospital to organize a scientific workshop with the theme "Peritoneal dialysis - Treatment approach for patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure".

Attending the workshop were leaders of Lao Cai Provincial Department of Health ; experts in Nephrology - Dialysis; Medical and Pharmaceutical Research and Training Institute of Bach Mai Hospital and 80 students from general and specialized hospitals at the provincial level; General Hospitals and Regional Medical Centers in the province.

At the workshop, lecturers of Bach Mai Hospital shared their knowledge and professional experience on the following topics: Peritoneal dialysis today - the trend in treating end-stage chronic kidney disease; Peritoneal dialysis methods, advantages compared to periodic hemodialysis; Indications and contraindications for peritoneal dialysis. Procedures for establishing a peritoneal dialysis unit; Circulars guiding health insurance payment for patients using this method.

Ms. Pham Bich Van, Deputy Director of the Department of Health, delivered the opening speech at the workshop.

According to Bach Mai Hospital's report from 2005 to 2018, the hospital has treated more than 300 patients with peritoneal dialysis. From 2019 to 2024, the hospital will support training, send experts directly to the facility to transfer and perfect the technique, and establish peritoneal dialysis units to receive patients from Bach Mai Hospital to the provinces for treatment in Cao Bang, Son La, Ha Giang , Hai Duong, Bac Giang, Lang Son, and Ha Nam.

Up to now, nationwide, there are more than 2,000 patients with chronic kidney failure undergoing peritoneal dialysis. This is a successful form of kidney replacement therapy with positive responses from patients due to its advantages: patients can perform it themselves at home after being trained without having to depend on the hospital; flexible in terms of time; patients can still go to work and school because the dialysis process by machine can take place at night.

The workshop helped improve the professional capacity of medical staff in the field of Nephrology - Urology - Dialysis in Lao Cai province, helping patients with chronic kidney failure have better treatment opportunities and do not need to be transferred.
